Big 4 Whitsundays Tropical Eco Resort

We headed to the Big 4 Whitsundays Tropical Eco Resort For my birthday (Sue’s), it’s just a short 5-minute drive from its location in Flametree to Airlie Beach. Like a lot of full-time travellers, we don’t necessarily want “stuff” but rather experiences for a special occasion. As we are parked on a property, caretaking at the moment, Larry booked us into a lovely cabin for a couple of nights. This lush caravan park is located on 7 acres and is surrounded by Conway National Park.

Our Cabin

Our cabin was modern and inviting. It was a two-bedroom cabin, with the other bedroom having two bunk beds. With that in mind, it would be a fantastic, cheap option for a family or group of friends. I enjoyed having a normal loo (the simple things). Also, it was cosy lying on the sofas watching TV at the end of the day.

The front deck was a peaceful place to sit and have happy hour as we watched other caravanners coming and going. There was something laid-back and homely about the place.

The Caravan Park

As mentioned, the Big 4 Whitsundays Tropical Eco Resort It is set on 7 acres. Grass and slab sites are surrounded by well-kept gardens, lawns, and palm trees. There is heaps of parking, from large rigs to trailers and swags. Bush Stone-curlew birds are found everywhere around the park and you might see a Lace Monitor or two. All sites are pet-friendly, and they also have pet-friendly accommodation.

Having a quick look at the camp kitchen as we past, it seems to have all of the normal camp kitchen stuff. Kettle, toaster, microwave, fridges, bbq, cooktop and table and chairs.

Solar Heated Pool

Thinking it was going to be cold we didn’t bring our swimmers. Having spoken to a lady getting out of the pool though I found out it was actually quite nice. Now I know its heated I’ll be having a dip next time.

Games Area

Anyone for chess? You’ll find a large chess game for those who can play (I can’t) There’s also a jet ski that the kids can play on or just a photo op. Opposite the chess there’s large chalk boards and picnic benches to relax and play.

Amenites

Staying in our lovely cabin I didn’t fully check out the facilities but I did take a couple of photos. The laundry and washing lines were adjacent to the toilets and showers. A dump point is also in this area. I’ve read they also have accessible bathrooms.

Live Music

Depending on the time of year, the Big 4 Whitsundays Tropical Eco Resort has a live musician playing. We were lucky enough to be there on a Wednesday which is when Dave Helgi Johan was playing. I requested he sing something from the Eagles and he obliged. Originally from Canada he’s now based in Airlie Beach. Unfortunately, I might have mentioned him coming from America to him, Oh Dear!

Right next to the park is the “Hanger Bar & Cafe”. This air-side cafe not only has delicious coffee and breakfast at 6.30am, but you can watch small planes and helicopters take off, right there on the runway. Lunch is also worth the two minute walk nextdoor.

Near By

While staying at the Big 4 Whitsundays Tropical Eco Resort we had a 5 minute drive to Airlie Beach. Airlie is the perfect base for day tours or island hopping. For foodies, there’s bars and restaurants galore.

Although Airlie is kind of our local area there’s a couple of new bars we wanted to check out. Also, I wanted a ride on the new Ferris wheel that looks out over the beach, lagoon and ocean. My Mum came with us and she was keen to check everything out too.

That View!

The new Ferris wheel has been installed until October, I believe. Mum didn’t realise she would be scared of the height, so she braved it for one rotation before getting off. I’m happy to say it wasn’t like the old Ferris wheels that rock, or I might have done the same 🙂 From the top, the views sweep across the beach, lagoon, lush hills, and turquoise water.

The first bar we went to was a new English pub on the main street called the “Pitch and Wicket.” They have sports on big screens as well as on the end of each long seating booth. The dartboards look pretty funky and they have pool tables. Larry and I had actually visited the day before and had a chip butty each—soooo good! The menu is very English.

We also visited a new sports bar, “Mulligans.” This bar also has sports on multiple TVs, a dart board, and games on most tables. Apparently, they also have a large golf simulator and also do food. Before we headed back to the caravan park, we went to “Mika,” a funky Mexican restaurant that has the most delicious chicken wings. The three of us shared wings and tacos—we would highly recommend a visit if you’re in Airlie.

The bus stop is right outside the Big 4 Whitsundays Tropical Eco Resort park. You can catch this bus for just 50c, whether you go to Airle, Whitsunday shopping centre, Whitsunday Plaza or the golf course at Whitsunday Green Golf. On certain buses the end of the line is Proserpine. In the other direction the bus also goes to Shute Harbour, which is just 5 minutes away. Here you can catch a ferry or boat to the islands. No need to pay for parking!

To Wrap It Up

I would highly recommend a stay at the Big 4 Whitsundays Tropical Eco Resort. It’s location is perfect! Other parks are on busy roads where as this one is close to town but feels like you’re in a peaceful, tropical hideaway.
