School Site – West Penong-

Cohen School

In Penong west, is the ruins of Cohen Public School. However a little bit of history still remains with the chimney still in place.

The school was in operation between 1933 and 1940. On it’s opening day it had nine children plus their teacher, Miss Norton.

The camp site is now behind the school that you see in the photo.

The New camp site

The free camp is in a large area just on the other side of the fence. It’s on the Eyre highway but we didn’t hear any traffic at night.

Across the road is a rest area with a bin if you need to get rid of rubbish.

We found this camp basic but one of the good one’s along the highway. I feel reading up on the history of these small areas, makes for a more interesting stay.

Cohen School Site – remains

Since no amenities are around you do have to be self contained. Also, if you don’t mind a basic camp, want some space and are heading along the Eyre Highway, this is a stop I would recommend.
