Free Camp – Mathison Rest Area- Northern Territory

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites

Mathison rest area is 104 km South West of Katherine.

This free camp gave us time to pull up and make a coffee. I love that we can pull up anywhere and plug in our espresso machine.

Our 2000w inverter helps with that of course. As we are full time on the road and the van is our home I like our homely comforts. Good coffee is up there with comfy bed.

Rest Area Amenities

This 24 hour free camp has a dump point, not the usual blue lid one but a dump point all the same.

Toilets are here as well as the usual undercover seating areas.

You have numerous bins to choose from and a couple of water tanks are also here.

They do say “don’t drink the water” but nice to have water available for other things. Wood BBQ/fire’s are available to keep warm in the cooler months or have a cook up.

This was a clean and tidy free camp to either take a break and empty the dunny or stay the night.

  1. Another informative report, I look forward to your reports as it gives me enough information to help me plan my future trips and my camp sites along the way.

    1. Cheers Vern, glad we can help with your planning 🙂

  2. hi Guys,
Thanks for your posts, it’s great following your trip – we head off early next year
i notice when you list a site, you check WiFi, then add (tested with Boost)
could you tell me what your WiFi setup is please

    thank you

    1. Hi Lesley
We use our mobile phones as a hotspot for out internet connection. Using Boost and prepaid plans. They claim to have 4G on the Telstra network.
This is true in some spots but certainly not in all. We mostly get 3G in the places we have visited, speed can also be a little slow at times. In saying this there are places you get no reception, such as parts of the Nullarbor.
      Happy planning 😀
