Mycow from $18 – Mackay – Queensland

Mycow was always on my radar. It’s strange name, good reviews and price were all draw cards for me.

Looking at the website a couple of years ago their main focus was long term and workers accommodation. They now focus equally on Camping and caravanning.

We checked in with the friendly hosts and were shown to our grass site.

The camp kitchen is modern and clean. It also has a TV lounge area. Mycow laundry isn’t just your average laundry.

It has a TV and vending machines should you want drinks or food. The Amenities are updated with a dump point close by.

Tent World

If you like boating or fishing you can pop your boat in the river or use the fishing area with rod holders. The landscaped boardwalk is also a nice place to sit and relax by the river. Follow the boardwalk to the BBQ deck.

You can choose between concrete and grass site’s. Some have great views next to the river. At the back you will find the grass sites, they are cheaper as these are un-powered site’s.

They have great deals the longer you stay and can cater for up to 40ft motorhomes.

Mycow Location

Mycow is located on the same road a Jayco Mackay. Handy, if like us you want accessories or warranty work doing on your van.

You are a short 3 minute drive from Woolworths shopping complex. Which has a bottle shop, butchers, bakery and more. Mackay CBD is also only a 10 minute drive away.

Winton – Qld – Matilda Country Tourist Park

Where’s Winton?

I seem to have missed writing about our stop at Winton. This was our stop between the famous “Walkabout Creek Pub” at Mackinlay (see here) and Longreach Tourist Park (here) and the Longreach free camp (here)

Winton, as most people know, is where Banjo Paterson Penned “Waltzing Matilda”. It is also the Dinosaur capital of Australia.

Having been here before this was a quick stop for the night before heading east.

Matilda Country Tourist Park

The park managers were away at the time we stayed. A guy who had been staying there a while was helping them out. We eventually found him or him us?

The park was smaller but had a pool and was tidy all be it a bit old. They also do swap and go gas which is a bonus. We missed the resident poet.

Winton

We unhooked and headed in to town for some food. I love the old building in the main street as well as the fun dinosaur bins 😀

Unfortunately the new Waltzing Matilda Centre was not up and running at the time. That I would have liked to visit!

Emerald – RV Camp and Park – Queensland

Emerald is in the central highlands of Queensland. This was our next stop after staying at Jericho Showgrounds.

The visitors centre is home to the big Easel which is a staggering 25 metres high. The painting of Van Gogh’s sunflowers is one of seven reproductions in the world by artist Cameron Cross.

Emerald has a sunflower festival each year so is an apt place to have this mammoth painting.

Camping in Emerald 

If you have WikiCamps you will see Emerald RV Camp ground and Emerald Tourist park are in the same place.

The Tourist park has a large grassed area for self contained RV’s, this is the cheaper camp.

RV Camp Ground

This is a large grass area big enough for any size rig. If you are self contained this is a great option. Only $8pp pn and right in town. You have use of the dump point etc. at the park.

Emerald Tourist Park

We chose to stay in the park as we wanted to stay hooked up. As of February 2021 we have stayed here 3 times now.

This park was a life saver during covid for us full time and essential travellers. This is the kind of park that looks after travellers and so we wanted to come back and support them, all be it one night.

The park is nice and grassy and has slabs to park next to. The last time we stayed was for one night and as you can see we didn’t bother to much with parking perfectly.

You can make use of the camp kitchen/BBQ/ TV area which is conveniently located by the laundry and toilets. Check out Emerald Tourist parks Facebook page here.

The Yabby Trap

Emerald Tourist Park now have a fish and chip van on site. Unfortunately it wasn’t open on the Sunday we were there, next time!

Sally the manager was lovely considering I rang the wrong phone number to try and book in. Note to self, put your glasses on…

If your heading to or through Emerald, I recommend staying at this well maintained, friendly park.

Longreach Tourist Park – Queensland

Longreach is home to quite a few tourist attractions. The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame is one of them, this is next to the outback Heritage Centre. Then you have the famous Qantas Founders Museum.

Find this place of many wonders between Winton and Barcaldine in the central west.

I had been here before with my best mate Sarah whilst on a camping road trip, many moons ago. Larry had not, so we decided to stop for the night.

Longreach Tourist Park

This is a huge and I mean huge park. Closely located to the Qantas Museum, which is a 2 minute drive or about 20 minute walk away.

Checking in you will see they have a tour desk and gifts. They are great at giving you all the information you need while in town. The “Woolshed” restaurant is on site although it’s seasonal and not open when we visited.

With the park being so large you have a choice of 3 amenity blocks and 4 laundry’s. There is a large camp kitchen by one of the two pools and electric BBQ site’s around the park.

They cater for swags as well as large Rv’s and busses. You can chose from a basic site to an on-suite site.

Huge birds strolled around the park. I had never seen anything like them. I have been told they are “Brolgas” by our readers 😀 

Three of them walked around our van, I was gob smacked. To me, they were like something out of a David Attenborough documentary. They got very close looking for food.

Local Attractions

1. Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame

You could walk here from the park in about 20 minutes. We headed here for coffee and cake and a look around.

While heading in we had another David Attenborough moment. A man on a BFG (Big Friendly Beast) was at the doors. Yes apparently you can ride a cow!

Open times are 9am to 5pm, 7 days a week. Excluding Christmas day & Boxing day. Anzac day it opens at 12pm.

2. Qantas Founders Museum

The museum is almost opposite the Hall of Fame. This museum shows you Qantas from it’s early days in Outback Queensland to present day.

You can walk around original and replica planes. Or you can wing walk on a 747, while on the ground that is. Maybe be a pilot yourself with the F35 flight simulator.

We also visited their gift shop and restaurant, the “McGinness” for morning tea. A nice little stop even if your not paying to go in to the museum.

3. Outback Pioneers, Cobb & C0

Experience the Thomson River cruises, Cobb & Co stagecoach rides. Working station experiences and an old time tent show.

4. Longreach Botanic Walkway

A 2.5 km interpretive native flora walk between the town centre and the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Iningai Nature Park, located on the Longreach Town common. includes sections of floodplains and waterholes.

More activities are in town and around the area, these are just a few.

A nice park and a town full of interesting history. You could spend big $ here but have a look around first to check out your options.

Longreach – Free Camp -QLD

Macsland rest area is just 25km NW of Longreach. We stopped for a quick break here before continuing to the tourist park in Longreach for the night.

If it was cooler weather we would have parked here for the night and driven in to Longreach to check out.

You will find a huge area here with lot of tracks to park down. Park out the back area in the shrub for some quiet or in the main area near the toilets.

There are also bins and some undercover seating. This is a great place to stop for the night near a town with lots to see.

Walkabout Creek Hotel – McKinlay – QLD

The Walkabout Creek Hotel is well known for it’s part in the Crocodile Dundee movie.

Personally I was so exited to actually camp here and check the place out. This pub is just over 100 km SE of Cloncurry and 240 km NW of Winton.

The Movie Set

The Walkabout Creek hotel has been moved to it’s currant location on the main street from it’s previous side street location.

Over time walls have been added etc so it looks a little different these days.

As well as the real bar, a movie set bar was built. This was so the locals could still use their own pub. The movie set bar is now located at the back of the pub for people to look at.

There is also a knife “That’s not a knife, this is a knife” behind the bar and a Crocodile Dundee hat if you want to dress up for a photo 😉

Many people pass through and take photo’s. The owner has signs up asking if you are only there to take photos please make a donation. They are not asking for the money for themselves but for the flying doctors.

If you were going to a movie set or other tourist attraction you would be paying so I think this is a fair call.

Of course if you are camping or buying a drink at the bar you can take as many photos as you like.

The Walkabout Creek Hotel

We spoke to the manager before heading out back to our powered site.

When heading into the pub for a drink and a nosy around, we passed the film set bar and had to take some photos.

How surreal to think the rest of the word has seen this and we are here 😀

I ordered a bottle of wine which came in an inventive outback wine cooler 😉 Just a little bit of the outback I love.

We settled in and asked the owner about the pub and it’s fame. She was so giving in the details and about the set and the crew.

The original cars are also out the front of the pub. The Never Never Tours lives on.

Again worth a donation to the flying doctors if not a drink at the bar 🙂

The walls of the pub are full of photos and memorabilia from the movie. You can sit and have something to eat while sitting next to a cut out of Mick Dundee or stroll around and check out the walls.

The Camp

You have a choice of powered or un-powered here. The sites are gravel and are big enough to stay hooked up.

They have toilets and showers plus a laundry.

Have a sit outside as the sunsets and watch the sky’s beautiful colours.

This was our second iconic pub/film set. The first was the Daly Waters Pub in the Northern Territory. We had watched Shane Jacobson and his crew filming.

The Daly Water Pub was also in the Aussie movie “Last Cab To Darwin” (See Daly Waters Pub Camp Here)

Just 76 km from Walkabout Creek you will find the Blue Heeler pub. we didn’t camp here but it’s another famous spot to stop for the night.

Gunpowder – 24hr Rest Stop – QLD

Gunpowder rest stop Queensland

Gunpowder, is a WW2 memorial site and what a great name to give it. In the 40’s the road here was upgraded from a dirt track.

This was to be part of the inland defence road system. Up to 1000 Australian and American military used this road each day “wow”.

Location

This rest stop is 136km from Camooweal and 53km from Mount Isa. We stopped off here for some lunch and a bit of a break in our journey.

Gunpowder Rest Stop

This 24hr stop is large and great for any size rig. If you are stopping for the night you can fit many vans around the place.

The ground is dirt/gravel and continues in to some trees and low foliage. There are fire pits for when there is no fire risk.

Whether you are stopping the night or like us having a break you can use the dump point. Toilets are in abundance, not just one but four.

There are bin’s all around the place and a skip bin, so the area is nice and clean. There’s a few undercover seating areas with trees and foliage. Nice to have a bit of shade and flowers.

This was a nice large area to stop before we headed on-wards to the famous Walkabout Creek Hotel.

Post Office Hotel – Camooweal – Queensland

We drove 260 km from our camp at Barkly Homestead roadhouse in the Northern Territory, to the small town of Camooweal in Queensland.

this camp is just 13 km away from the NT/Qld border. Stopping for the night at the Post office hotel.

Camping at the Post Office Hotel

You have a couple of choices of camps in Camooweal. We chose to stay in the pub’s camp ground.

This is such a dry part of the country yet they did have some lovely green grass around the place.

The parking areas are big enough so you can stay hooked up and drive through. You have power and water if needed or choose an un-powerd site.

As well as a toilet and shower block they have a laundry.

There is a rack here with clothes. You can swap, take or leave clothes which I think is a great idea. There is also a little book swap area.

We were surprised that this pub stop had a pool, especially in the middle of nowhere. Heading to the pool to cool off before we went to the pub for lunch.

Post Office Hotel

The pub is a good place to have a cold one and cool down. Have a bit of lunch or have a game of pool.

Pop back in for dinner to save cooking. They also sell coffee and do take away alcohol.

If you’re just passing through you can pop in and grab something to take with you.

Meals

Monday to Saturday

Dinner 6.30 – 8.30 pm

Camooweal

The Post office/General Store is opposite the pub. This has all your usual basics plus the odd bits and pieces you might need.

They have things like tyre repair kit, fishing gear, hoses, tarps and basic tools are available.

Places to visit

  • The Drovers Camp Museum – Local knowledge on the droving history of Camooweal. Tours daily between May and September

 

  • The Caves National Park, 4×4 only. The caves start at the bottom of a large sink hole but can only be viewed from above.

 

  • Lake Francis is a stones throw from Camooweal. It’s part of the Georgina river and has an abundance of bird life and water lilies.

 

  • Camooweal has two Roadhouses to chose from for your fuel

Avon Downs Rest Area – Free Camp – NT

Avon Downs …

After leaving Barkly Homestead and heading towards Queensland we stopped for a break. Stopping at Avon Downs in Ranken.

This 24 hours rest stop is 56 km before the NT/QLD border.

History …

This is a basic stop on the main highway opposite a police station, with some interesting history.

The longest sheep droving trip in Australian history ended here. Starting in Rich Avon, Victoria with 11,000 sheep and ending with 4,000 sheep 16 months later at Avon Downs, Northern Territory.

There has also been a police presence since the early 1900 due to horse thieves and cattle duffers back in the day.

The Rest Area …

The area is bitumen and gravel and has a few trees. You can use the two undercover seating areas as well as the bbq’s/fire pit.

A toilet is here as are bins if you need a place to discard your rubbish. There is also a water tank but the water may not be suitable for drinking.

Barkly Homestead Roadhouse – Northern Territory

Barkly Homestead is a remote roadhouse and yet the nicest we have stayed at. From the dinner to the caravan parking, all very nice.

This was our stop after Banka Banka Station a great but basic camp. Barkly Roadhouse was a little bit of luxury we were not expecting.

After topping up with fuel we head in a checked out the roadhouse. With it’s amazing looking pie’s, cakes, restaurant and bar we new we would be back that night.

The camp

At Barkly you will find all you need in a camp. Whether you are in a tent or a van.

For tents, you have a large grass area and a camp kitchen with bbq’s. For vans they have a couple of parking areas.

Parking lanes with trees either side for power and water sites and a large area for un-powered.

With the Northern Territory heat the pool is a welcome sight as is the shade from some of the trees.

They have a dump point and the usual toilet, shower and laundry.

Barkly Homestead Roadhouse

You can head to the roadhouse for Barista coffee, snacks, lunch, dinner, drinks, clothes, food, souvenirs. Gas bottle refills

We loved the look of the pastry’s so had a pie and cake for lunch. They do have healthy options which is unusual for a roadhouse.

You can can also get fruit and beautifully filled fresh sandwiches.

Head back at night for dinner and check out the meals and bar. The food is restaurant quality and presented as it would be in any good city cafe.

Whether you are having dinner or not, head to the bar for a refreshing drink and aircon.

If you like a game of pool head to the well presented outdoor area and relax.

Opening times

Grill – 6am-8.30pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Bar – Happy hour 4pm-5pm closes at 10pm
