Theodore Showground – Queensland

Having left the funky Silver Wattle Caravan park in Mount Morgan, we headed 170km down to Theodore Showground. This showground is located about 230km north of Miles and 69km south of Banana.

Camping At Theodore Showground

Having read this was a great place to stay for $20pn or $100 for the week, we decided to stay for a week. We found a place to park next to one of the power and water sites. There are many many places to hook up with heaps of room between each one. Bins are located between almost every site. In the afternoon, Debbie comes around and collects your fee.

Caravan parking is around the outside of the showground oval. Lots of grass and gravel sites, ours was pretty flat. Theodore Showground is one of those places people come back to time and time again as it’s a great spot to stay at a great price. One gentleman comes back for a few weeks at a time.

Theodore Showground Amenities

The amenities block looks pretty good. It has the usual toilets and showers, although the showers look great. You go into a little room which houses the shower so you have heaps of room to put your belonging and keep them dry.

You can use the showers even if you’re not staying here. But there is a fee of $5 if you’re not staying at the showground. A box on the outside of the amenities to pop your $5 in. However the toilets and showers are included in your camping fee if you’re staying.

BBQ Area

Opposite the amenities is a nice little area with a BBQ and seating. They are under a couple of bagolas. You’ll also find a couple of concrete benches and seating on the opposite side.

Dump Point

I do like that Theodore showground has a dump point. It’s away from the camping area in a nice little area of it’s own. For those who like to use there own amenities as we do, this is always a bonus. It makes it less of a hassle trying to find a place to emptying it and we can stay for longer.

Have A Drive Or A Walk

If you’re a walker you could have a stroll into town, we chose to drive. Theodore showground is only about 1km from town. Theodore is a small friendly town with a good IGA, friendly Cafe/ gift shop/ info centre and they have a post office. The pub/bottle shop looks like a good place to spend a couple of hours and have lunch. We got a couple of things from the bottle shop to take back to the van.

The girl at the servo was also friendly and had a bit of a chat while Larry was filling up with fuel. This servo also has food and drink as other bits and pieces. I want to give a shout out to Joseph at the chemist he was friendly and super helpful.

Horses For Courses

If you’re in to your horses, the weekend seems to be a good time to see some horse riding. As with our Hipcamp stay at Arcadia in Moongan, you can stay here with your horses. This would also be a brilliant place to stop, camp, rest or exercise your horses.

There is a little road noise if you’re sensitive to that kind of thing. In the past I was. Now, as we’ve lived between a main road and a train line, we don’t mind it at all. Trucks pass in the day and park up in the rest area near the showground over night. Think of it more of Road Train and wide load spotting. Lots of trucks pass with what looks like large mining equipment on them.

Theodore Showground is one we will definitely be returning to. It’s a well looked after camp, with all you need, at great price and in a friendly town.
