Bungle Bungles and Free Camping at Spring Creek Rest Area – WA

Bungle Bungles..

The Bungle Bungles were always number one on my list of things to see. I had seen TV footage of flights over this world heritage area of Purnululu National Park and was in awe.

How remote, ancient and colourful, just incredible.

These natural forming banded sandstone domes were formed over 360 million years ago

I’m not really into tourist attractions and although thousands of tourists visit the Bungles, this is different. This is nature at its best and I loveee Nature!

Until recently I thought flying over was the only way to see them. I was so happy to learn only a few weeks ago we could drive in.

The road condition was still unknown territory until we spoke to a couple at the camp who had just got back from their drive.

The visitors centre recommend you have enough fuel for 200km of driving when coming off the Highway.

Spring Creek Free Camp

We stopped at Spring Creek 24 hr camp as we were told it was a good camp and by the river.

Also a great place to unhook your van to drive to the Bungle Bungles. This is one of the best free camps we have stayed around Australia. 

The camp has two levels. The top is a large sealed area and has toilets and seating.

There is a dump point and large skip bins to get rid of your rubbish. Wooden BBQ”s are also available.

The lower area is by the creek and the area is hard soil. Only two other vans were there when we arrived by the creek.

We arrived about 11.30am just before two other lots of campers arrived. Good timing as we got a good spot 🙂

The lower area has a couple of seating areas, BBQ and the best views. Even if you don’t get a spot by the water you can still see it.

It’s a lovely shady spot if you are lucky enough to get a spot here.

Wild Life At The Camp

This camp is full of wildlife. Skinks of all colours, one that I’m sure was a raccoon in a past life (black with a long white stripe)

Cows wander on both sides of the creek and come quite close. They are skittish and move away if you mooove quickly 😉 We found them in one of the water crossing’s to the Bungle Bungles the next day.

You hear so many types of birds and will spot fish here. I only spotted small ones though.

A couple of people had a dip to cool down as it was around 45C. The hottest night we have ever had in the van so far.

Bungles Other Camping

The road in, is opposite the camp. It’s a 53 km of corrugated road that leads you past the Bungle Bungles caravan park.

You have the option to leave your van here rather then the free camp if you are worried.

Camping Gear & Games

You will need a 4×4 for the rest of this road. Campsite at the National Park is accessed by four-wheel-drive vehicles and high clearance, single axle, towable units.
You can camp here as they have a couple camp sites around the place. Open from April to December both have toilets and bore water.

Watching the sunset as you drive here is beautiful, it gave me goose bumps. Camping here over night I imagine you would see world class sunsets.

My Bungle Bungles Dream

The day had arrived, I was so exited. At 5am we woke so we would beat some of the heat. It was already 27C but who cares I had a sunrise and my number one destination to see 😀

Heading off the highway and down the corrugated road. We crossed a few water holes none very deep at this time.

They say to see Cathedral Gorge first so you are not in the heat of the day. We did, as it was recommended by the lady at our camp.

A great suggestion as we had lots of shade and it was not to hot.

As we were leaving the Cathedral a french couple arrived. Walking back out we could hear them singing.

Their beautiful singing voices filled the cathedral and continued through the domes outside. We both stopped to listen and had to record it, spectacular memory.

We thanked them when passing them later on.

Walking back through The Domes you walk through some sand and up some stairs. Not to hard if you’re worried.

You can check out many lookouts. We chose to drive to Kungkalanayi Lookout. It has a views for miles.

Not a place you would want to be in the heat of the day.

Payment to enter the National Park

I was wondering how the whole payment thing worked. I had heard you have to pay a fee to get in as it’s a national park.

Who do you pay? How much? Are they awake at 6am?

As we arrived at the visitors centre and read the signs.

They ask you to take an envelope they provide, pop in your money and rip of part of it to put on your window screen.

The prices are written so you know how much to pay. We paid $13 for our vehicle, $13 to see my number one place, how good is that!

They have different prices for seniors and camping all worth the price. If you already have a national parks pass you don’t need to pay again.

I’m sure the flight over is another step up. Although being right there, being able to touch the rock and take photos close up was a dream come true.

Larrawa Station Nature Stay – WA

We arrived at Larrawa after our drive north from Fitzroy Crossing. Jan, who we had met there said we should check it out.

You enter off the main highway through a gate to a 4km dirt road. Any vehicle can use it. They even use it in the wet season.

We were the first to arrive and chose a spot near the seating area. Sites have water but no power.

Skye, who came to collect our money said the water is very good. She was friendly and chatty and a great asset to the place.

We watched the sun going down as a couple of other people turned up. Larrawa Station has great sunsets!

A couple of guys on motorbikes with tents, a couple with a rooftop tent and a family with a camper trailer all turned up just on sundown.

Any size rig would fit here and be happy..

Larrawa Station Nature Stay

The sites are all grass. They have sprinklers operating on unused sites to try and keep them looking good. 

There toilets are spotless and proper flushable toilets and their shower heads are large rainwater showers.

You can go for a 1 km stroll to the river which we were told has water, all be it not a lot.

We spotted cows, horses and sheep here. This would be a spot you can chill out and relax for a few days.

As it is a working cattle station you are bound to see animals and staff working.

They close from around October to March but we would stay here again. Next time for more then one night!

Fitzroy Crossing – Fitzroy River Lodge – WA

Fitzroy River Lodge is an oasis or is that a mirage? in Fitzroy crossing.

We were not expecting it at all. We had chatted to someone at the Boab Tree free camp down the road, he had recommended it.

The Main Lodge

Driving in, it looked like a nice hotel or country club. The reception area again is like a hotel lobby with lovely couches and information desk.

They also have a couple of computers for you to use in this area.

Attached to the reception area is a bar/restaurant. We didn’t visit ourselves but we have heard good reviews.

Fitzroy Crossing Camping

You have a couple of places to choose at Fitzroy. I chose this one as it had good reviews. Due to it being end of season (September at the time of visiting) we got to choose our own spot.

Driving around the corner you see an enormous grass area. Again this could be a country or golf club.

Passing the tennis courts we chose a large drive through site so we could stay connected.

Have a drive around first, as you’ll find many places with more shade and grass. This camp is a popular place that many people chose.

There are large blocks of toilets and showers, older but clean.

A laundry is attached to one of the blocks with a sink for your washing.

The camp kitchen is a large area with fridges, BBQ’s, microwaves, seating, toaster, sink etc.

There also seems to be a resident cat to go with the many wallaby’s around the camp.

At the swimming pool, we had a swim to cool down and had a chat to Jan and her husband.

They mentioned a free camp near the Bungle Bungles called Spring Creek. This is the No. 1 place I wanted to visit.

Jan also told me about a camp called Larrawa Station Nature Stay less then 200km away. We added it to our WikiCamp List.

We would stay here again if we were passing the area.

Boab Tree Rest Area – Free Camp – Camballin – WA

The Boab Tree

This stop is by a huge Boab tree. Note: this is no longer an overnight stop!

 

We wanted to see it as it looked like something from prehistoric days. It’s between Broome and Fitzroy Crossing.

It’s a mammoth size tree that people have sadly written on over the years. In saying that the writing gives an indication of the how long it has been standing.

Lets hope it stands for many more years, without the writing would be nice.

The Camp

If like us you stop just for a break you can sit on the seating area under it’s shaded arms.

The area around the tree is gravel. There are a couple of undercover seating areas with wooden BBQ’s for you to use.

You’ll also find two big skip bins for your rubbish. We are finding free camps along this route have these when entering/exiting, very handy!

Stop by and check out this magnificent Boab tree. WikiCamps say’s this is a 24hr camp.

Nillibubbica Rest Area – Free Camp – Waterbank – WA

One of our rest stops along the Great Northern highway was Nillibubbica Rest Area.

A large dirt area big enough for any size rig. This is about 100km north of Broome as we were heading towards Fitzroy Crossing.

A few other people had stopped to have a rest to. It’s a handy place with toilets and a dump point.

We had a chat and a coffee with some other travellers in one of the undercover seating areas.

As with other free camps along this stretch of the highway you see wood fire BBQ’s.

Large skip bins are here on your way out, so no need for litter.

A lot of the free camps/rest areas are turning out to look almost the same. But if the same means all the above I’m more then happy 🙂

Broome and Palm Grove Holiday Resort – WA

Broome was not a must do on our list although the sunsets and camels looked like it was worth a visit.

WikiCamps was checked and we chose Palm Grove Holiday Resort. One of the reasons we chose it was because it was close to the Cable Beach.

You do feel like you are driving in to a resort as you park under the front entrance. The reception is also very nice and has all your tour brochures in the information area.

We paid for a power and water site as well as a $20 deposit for the boom gate key.

It’s a large park although ourselves and others found the sites a tight squeeze getting in. Everyone managed but it could be frustrating for some with larger set-ups.

Around The Camp

The pool and its surrounding area was full. As you can imagine with the heat of Broome it looked like a great little oasis.

They have a large camp kitchen. It has fridges, microwave, BBQ, kettles, sinks etc.

If your a keen fisherman/woman you will find a fish cleaning area. The dump point is close by as is the toilet and shower block. They are huge as is the laundry. 

Go For A Walk

Next door is a mini golf range and general store and cafe. It’s a handy place and opposite a walking track to the beach.

Head up the track for a short stroll to Broome’s famous Cable Beach.

The short track passes through some greenery and on to some sand dunes.

Head down to the beach for a swim between the flags.

Opposite the Store is a fun, family friendly, bar called Divers Tavern

At the time we were here it was school holidays. The place was buzzing and had a great atmosphere.

They were having crab races 🙂 The money raised went to volunteers who look after Kimberly wildlife rehabilitation.

We met Jess and Dane at the pub and chatted all night. All of us buying raffle tickets and having a giggle at the crabs.

I had the best night I have had in a very long time. The down side was, the next day was wasted, as I felt so ill 🙁 my own fault!

Go for a short drive around Broome

There are two shopping centres, one with a full size Target, not just country 😀 Also one of those cheap shops “Red Dot” which always comes in handy.

We also found ourselves at the wharf restaurant. I’m surprised how busy it was although it was on the water it was at the end of nowhere.

Adventure Awaits for fun camping

As I was still feeling delicate from our night out, we just had a small snack. This place would be the place to go if you love your sea food.
Plate after plate of spectacular sea food was being served up around us.

I so missed out in Broome on this occasion! But we will have many more opportunities to do the tourist things like

  • Fly to the Bungle bungles

Goldwire Rest Area – 24 hr free camp – WA

We were going to be taking a break from our journey at Goldwire Rest Area but ended up staying the night.

This large 24hr free camp has all you need and had a good feel about it. It also had a much needed breeze.

You’ll find it between Eighty mile beach and Broome.

The ground is mainly gravel but you will find a few slabs to park on or next to.

As well as the many undercover seating areas there are random smaller ones around the place.

All have small wood BBQ’s next to them. Some have shade on three sides.

The northern WA free camps are all similar to this and hats good to see.

Toilets are pump action and you will find a dump point at the back.

This camp and others we have recently been to, have what look like holes in the ground with an old toilet seat?

This is separate to the obvious new toilets. Are they the original toilets maybe?

Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park – WA

After leaving the lovely Pardoo station we headed to Eighty Mile Beach, around 130Km away.

Stopping at Pardoo Roadhouse for a decent coffee and topping up with fuel.

Much like Pardoo, Eighty Mile Beach Caravan park has an unsealed road. A little corrugated but fine for two wheel drive if you take it easy.

We were overtaken by another caravan eager to get to the beach even though we were doing 65kmh. Leaving us in a dust trail and flicking up stones so we had to slow down (insert angry face here)

At the park we again chose a powered drive through site. Most sites are large and green.

All sites are a short stroll to the beach past the war memorial. Also all site’s are on green grass and are big enough for any size rig.

You have plenty of room to put out your awning.

You have the choice of a couple of BBQ’s and a camp kitchen should you need one.

The laundry is also here as are the toilets and showers.

Outdoor showers are on your way back from the beach which is handy. The park is kept very clean and tidy and is a fantastic location.

Eighty Mile Beach

Parking up, we headed straight to the beach.

Wow, if you like to fish this is the place for you. The beach was full for as far as the eye could see with rods.

Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t over crowded it was actually a great sight to see. You can drive along the beach and pick your spot.

On the way down to the beach was a dried up snake, while on the beach was a couple of dried up stingray and a tiny shark of sorts. Nature is interesting alive or dead.

We were stopped by one fisherman and told there was a shark in the water. We did spot something but it could have been a large stingray.

Larry was told one had been spotted the day before, “the size of my caravan” the guy said, A fisherman’s tale perhaps?

The On-site Shop

After our stroll up and down the beach we headed back to the park to check out the store.

The reception/store also sells all-sorts, including hot food and cold food as well as fishing gear.

You will find it well stocked with fresh produce and frozen meats.

We grabbed an ice-cream and sat on one of the many out door seating areas. Choosing to sit by what looked like large whale bones, amazing.

Birds are very friendly and will land on you. People must feed them as they are not scared at all.

If you love your fishing or strolling along the beach then this is the place for you!

Pardoo Station Stay – WA

Pardoo Station caravan park beach

Other travellers had told us how good Pardoo station was so we decided to give it a go.

The station is down an unsealed dirt road and it’s a little corrugated. Although you don’t need an off road vehicle it pays to take it slowly.

Pardoo is between Port Hedland and Eighty Mile Beach.

As soon as we arrived I wanted to stay longer, it just has a nice feel about it.

Also they have a swimming pool. In the 35c heat I was sold 🙂

We chose a spot in the shade and hooked up to power and water. They do say not to drink the water because it’s not filtered. If you are worried, they do have a tap near reception/ store for drinking water.

The on site store sells all your basics as well as alcohol and fishing gear.

The Camp

At Pardoo you have a choice of over a hundred sites. Most sites are lovely green grass.

You pay the same for power as you do unpowerd so we chose power. On arrival they give you a electronic swipe card to get in and out of the gate. This is a $20 deposit that you get back on departure.

If you pay with your card they put it back on it when you’ve checked out.

The pool is very welcoming. You’ll find it next to the large communal fire pit. The pit is lit at 5pm each night April – October.

Adjacent to the pool, you’ll find the coffin dodgers bowling green sign. Hire bowls from the store for a gold coin donation.

The funds go to the Royal Flying Doctors.

Four shower/toilet blocks are around Pardoo camp. They also have a laundry and camp kitchen.

The camp kitchen has everything you need and more including dining table and couch area.

BBQ’s are near a nice little seating area. As well as sitting to enjoying your BBQ, grab a coffee from the store and chill out here.

Pardoo do proper coffee I might add. The store also sells alcohol and all your basics

As well as the BBQ area Pardoo has an on-site restaurant. Choose between breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We were really looking forward to tasting their steaks as it would be fresh off the land. Unfortunately they had a group booking so we missed out.

Staff were good enough to offer some chips or similar if we had wanted. All good as we had food, maybe next time 🙂

Children don’t miss out here, they can head to the calf feeding at 5pm or 7am. They might also spot horses in the same area.

Cows can be seen close by on a drive to the coast line.

Pardoo Coast Drive

Do you like to fish or like a stroll along the beach? Have a drive to the Pardoo coast line.

This was the first place we drove to. The view is stunning and it’s a lovely place to visit. Reception give you a print out of the tidal times on your arrival as well as a map of the 4×4 drive.

If you need it they also have a place to wash down your car and put air in your tyres.

Pardoo Creek

The second place we arrived at was Pardoo Creek. A few people had already set up high up on the rocks waiting for the tide to come in.

We had a stroll along the beach and checked out some coral and shells. The tide was coming in fast but it was beautiful. 

Red Point

Red Point was our next stop. Apart from a couple in there tinny and another couple fishing the place was empty.

Bones Beach

Lastly, Bones Beach was a large dry sandy area. Bones is a tidal area and would fill up quickly.

Gutting of fish has to be done at the beach and they have a wash down bay if you need it.

Pardoo is a very relaxing place and has everything you could need. I’m so glad this place was recommended to us.

Would we stay again? Heck yes! It’s a place we would stop at again and recommend to others.
