The Hebel Hotel is five minutes from the Qld/NSW border. We headed here for a cold drink on our way through from our night in St George to our stop in Lightning Ridge.
Last time we passed the Hebel Hotel it was closed. Indeed, it was sad to see such an iconic pub no longer open. However, the doors are now open and it’s well worth a visit.
Originally a Cobb & Co stopover, the Hebel Hotel was opened in 1894. Now A great stopover for caravans and camping.
The Hebel Hotel
The first thing you notice is the classic tin roof and the rustic wooden facade. Once you get closer and have a stroll along the verandah you see the fun and quirky art.
Before going into the Hebel Hotel you’ll see the fake shutter windows with paintings that will make you smile. A Cockatoo drinking a can of coke on one and similarly emu’s on another.
Once inside the bar, the old wood and corrugated iron look continues. Likewise, quirky signs, paintings and multiple baseball caps hang from the ceiling. What’s an outback pub without stuff hanging from the ceiling.
After ordering a cold drink we headed out the back. The first thing I noticed was the old rusty classic car. I don’t know why I have a thing for old rusty cars but I do.
Larry had a stroll around with his new 360 degree camera and took some great shots, inside and out of the pub.

Hebel Hotel Camping
As we didn’t stay the night I can only give basic details. I did ask the girl behind the bar if camping was at the area behind the hotel. Her reply was “ no, it’s across the road behind the cafe”. However there is an area with gravel and bins behind the pub.
I have read reviews that say free camping is behind the pub and also across the road behind the cafe. The cafe also has some powered sites.
Either way there is free camping at this classic historical pub. Stop for a night or stop for a drink you wont regret it.
