Wooramel Station –
Wooramel is a large 356,000 acre working cattle station. Now part camp-ground with oodles of rustic charm.
As you drive in you see cows and goats wondering around. The odd Emu having a look, then kicking up a dust storm as its running away.
The station is about 1 km down a graded road. Suitable for any car or van.
The Camp-ground
Arriving at the reception, you get a good indication of what the rest of the place is going to be like.
You are greeted by with quirky metal animals and colourful bottles in a lovely bush setting.
Opposite is the huge Wooramel sign made of recycled materials. Some nice seating outside the office to relax and a large bell to ring if no one is in the office.
We were given a map during check-in and given a free choice of where we wanted to camp.
Driving around we decided on a spot next to the river. The river being an upside down river. Running only 2-3 times a year. In our case it was a dry river.
Each camp is sectioned off by large ropes on the ground. Most are large and you are able to stay hooked up if you want to.
Additionally each also has its own fire pit. Some have a plate you can cook on. As well as the firewood from reception for $15 they are happy for you to collect your own.
We had a couple of nights sitting around the warmth of our own fire. Looking up at the stars was breathtaking.
A large grass area is available if you have a tent or if you prefer to be on grass.
Amenities
A few showers and toilets are around the camp-ground. All clean and well kept. I loved the large shower made out of a water tank. As well as the large shower head and a roof that is almost open air.
Further more if you need a camp kitchen one is available with BBQ’s, sink and seating. Bin’s are scattered everywhere and you don’t have to walk far to find one.
Wooramel Hot Artesian Baths
One of the main reasons ( if not the reason) people come to Wooramel is for the hot baths.
The artesian water is approximately 33oC. It arrives at the baths after natural pressure sends it 240 m to the surface. Coupled with high minerals they are relaxing and well worth a dip.
Communal camp fire and sunset seating
Each night you are invited to the communal camp fire, situated on the bank of the river. In particular it was so nice to have a dedicated place to meet other travellers.
Someone comes to light the fire around 5.50 pm as the sun sets. While lots of people brought there own chairs, large logs are around the fire to sit on.

Close by are recycled tables made from huge cable storage thingy-ma-jigs. Around the tables more recycling, in the form of chairs and bar stools.
Watching the sunset from this area you will see cows and goats. Both wander across the river back and forth for the small amount of water seeping in to the river.
One of the main reasons I like this camp is for this area. I love that you can meet others around the fire each night if you choose. Whether you’re shy or love company you don’t need an invite. Just grab a drink, pull up a log and watch the sunset.
Drives and Walks
Beyond the camp ground they have a cool junk yard. Lots of old rusty cars, washing machines and interesting stuff worth checking out.
Additionally you also get given a map of a couple of drives you can do on the property. One of which is to the old Wooramel shearing shed and workers quarters.
There are two 4×4 drives you can go on. I recommend the short drive, this will take you to the old shearing shed. Also to where you can look out to the ocean. When doing either 4×4 drive it’s also the best time to pick up dry firewood along the way.
Driving along the dirt track surrounded by native bush land. The odd kangaroo spotted us and hopped away before I could take a decent photo.
We stopped as we drove along the cliffs to take in the view. Wooramel have 60km of coastline frontage to the Indian ocean. This is the spot you want to bring your picnic and take it all in.
Sheering Sheds and quarters
Arriving at the old sheering sheds I got a bit exited. I love old rustic buildings and what they might hold inside. I was not disappointed.
The shearing shed itself still had old shawn wool sitting where they had left it. Wooramel decided to change from Merino sheep to a meat breed. Consequently they no longer use this building.
Further more old tools, shoes and machinery were captivating. If the timber in those old walls could talk. They would tell stories of hard yaka and hot days.
By and large the shearers quarters are now dilapidated wooden buildings. As is the kitchen and amenities block.
Despite this the bedrooms still have the odd single mattress or wooden base. Previously they would have once had beautiful sash windows and a bench outside each door. No air-conditioning for these hard working folk though.

The kitchen has a some old relics. Beginning with an old Aga stove that would have been in every country kitchen. Not forgetting the rusty vintage fridges that look like they have seen better days. Such character and history within these walls.
Eco Tents
Four eco tents are available to stay in if you want a different experience. Each is beautifully laid out and has a bed looking out to the river. Besides the small deck with table and chairs they also have a fire-pit.
Overall Wooramel River Retreat has a lot to offer. What it hasn’t got is water and power. Stating the obvious though, do not let that put you off or you will be missing out.
In conclusion this is a camp filled with rustic charm. We highly recommend stopping for at least one star studied night. Check out the video below 😀
