The Glengarry Hilton hotel and free camp is the second of our pubs in the scrub visits. We headed here for lunch on our drive from our camp at Opal Caravan Park in Lightning Ridge.
The road in to the pub is in parts corrugated and graded dirt/gravel. Therefore, you might want to check the road conditions at the time of your travel. I would enquire with the pub, just to be sure.
Take your time as the local sign says “ Welcome to the home of the battler – This is God’s country please don’t drive through it like Hell “
Road signs along the way lead you to each pub. In fact, you pass “The Pub With No Beer” here. However, I’m pretty sure this is not “THE” Pub With No Beer! or a pub at all? It is however another fun and quirky part of the drive through these parts.
Glengarry Hilton Free Camp
As we came here to have lunch we didn’t stay the night. However, they have toilets open 24/7 and free camping is out the back of the pub. The parking area is a large, flat looking dirt/gravel area.
Remember, this is a mining community in the dusty opal fields, so take it as it comes. A little rough around the edges maybe, but aren’t all diamonds in the rough? Or is that an opal!
Much like the Club In The Scrub Pub down the road, this place has character, friendly staff and locals. We liked it a lot!
Glengarry Hilton Hotel
Arriving at the Hilton, we headed straight to the menu board. While looking what to order I could hear the kitchen lady who was popping her head out of the service window. She was saying, in a chirpy voice to the people before us, “It wont be long”. Now, you need to remember it was hot in early March, the kitchen must have been stifling. However this lady was still bright and polite.

Heading over to the bar you notice the rustic wooden stools and tables, just brilliant. As with other outback pubs you see collections of hats and caps on the tin roof and writing on the corrugated bar. This flows through to the outside dinning area where you can write you’re own “I was here”
In the winter you might not want alfresco dining so head to the inside area. You’ll find a few comfy couch chairs as well as dining table and chairs. Not forgetting the large wood burner too keep the place cosy and a couple of pool tables.
The Food
Even before we ordered I knew the food was going to be great. I mean, to be feeding the hungry miners that live and work here, it’s got to be a decent feed. I wasn’t wrong 😀
The Glengarry Hilton has such tasty burgers, I can vouch for that. While Larry enjoyed his steak sandwich. Likewise, a couple of ladies we met at The Club In The Scrub Pub, turned up and had burger and chips, HUGE!
Add it to your Lightning Ridge places to visit, pub in the scrub list
On a final note, if you’re worried about safety, don’t be, they have you covered 😀
