Our caravan cupboards makeover started with covering our cupboard doors & fridge with peel and stick contact paper. As well as spraying our caravan door handles another colour. Then we swapped our original on-suite bathroom concertina door, for a white oak looking one.

Finally (well almost finally) I wanted our home on the road to be more modern, colourful and brighter than the original brown, all wood look. With that in mind, we also decided to add some colour by adding some sage green peel and stick contact paper to a couple of walls as well as adding a few square mirrors. Oh yes, and some plants 🙂

Initially we contacted Jayco and the Jayco dealer that we purchased our 2016 Starcraft from, to see if they could supply new white doors to fit. We had upgraded our kitchen and on-suite cupboard doors on purchase but there wasn’t an option at the time to upgrade all of the doors. Unfortunately, at the end of the day it couldn’t be done.

Caravan Cupboards Makeover – Matt Finish

Having thought about how we could change the doors ourselves we took the plunge and ordered a roll of matt white contact paper from Amazon. I didn’t want to order heaps in case it wasn’t the right colour or hard to use. Also, I was only thinking of just doing certain doors.

After waiting a couple of weeks for the contact paper to arrive, Larry started our caravan cupboards makeover on one of the doors. I was pleased to see it looked smooth and was so much easier than we thought it would be to put on. After taking our time to stand back and look at what a great job Larry did, I felt the matt contact paper was to flat and more like wall paper than the shinier doors of the kitchen and bathroom sink areas.

Having felt the first roll was an easy product to use for our caravan cupboards makeover, we ordered a couple of gloss rolls. Choosing to purchase them from the same brand. It said it come with a metal flake which was a little bit of a worry. Reading one of the reviews, it mentioned that they thought it “would be sparklier”. With that in mind we new it wouldn’t be to bad.

Caravan Cupboard Makeover – Gloss Finish

As soon as we opened the new rolls I knew ordering the gloss was a good choice. They are a cleaner white than the original upgraded kitchen and bathroom doors but still a great choice for us. Larry was eager to get the new contact paper on a door and was doing the first gloss caravan cupboard makeover before I knew it.

Thinking about covering the back of the doors was something of an after thought. As we still had a large roll of matt paper left we started to back the doors with it. This did change as we did more doors. Moreover, doors we use a lot. Having now decided to do all the cupboard doors we we’re going to order more more gloss paper.

Now we started using the gloss to back the doors, until it ran out. Two more gloss rolls were ordered to finish the left over doors and our six draws.

Caravan Cupboards Makeover – Door Handles

While doing the doors I thought it might be nice to change the handles for some new ones. Looking at the price, I thought again. We discussed spray painting them and chose black for a bold change. We had used a can of matt black spray on the BBQ Arm that Larry made and decided to go for the same look.

Larry drilled holes in some old timber we had, sitting the handles on it, making them easier to spray. We gave them a light sand before giving them a coat of spray. Leaving them for 24 hours before giving them a second spray. The end result is a bold black handle that matches our black couch and fridge surround.

Just to note, one handle was left on the ute roof and is now on a highway somewhere, ooppss. To replace one black handle is around $16 whereas to spray 40 odd handles black was around $13. Spraying them black was a much cheaper option than buying new ones.

Caravan Fridge Door Makeover

Once we decided to do all the cupboard doors, we also started thinking about the caravan fridge door. The front insert on the fridge are also wood. We decided to order some brushed stainless steel looking contact paper to modernise it. Larry filled a little dent in the wood before sanding back. Then he removed the wood panel off the freezer section to cover it.

I believe the stainless steel contact paper is a little thinner than the white cupboard paper but it still worked just as well. After trying to remove the wood on the larger fridge area and failing, we put the contact paper on it while still in place.

Starting at the top and working our way down, we initially had a bit of a hiccup. A bubble appeared so we lifted it off again. Smoothing it back down again it began to crease. I think this was because when we pulled it back, we pulled from the side not back straight to the top. It may have stretched the paper a little? We decided to continue putting it on as we didn’t have enough roll left to do it again. Thankfully the rest went on perfectly.

As Part Of Our Caravan Cupboards Makeover

As with the white contact paper, it does show up any blemishes. It’s not perfect but it’s been a few weeks and we don’t notice the crease that much. If we decide to replace it, we’ll try again. Next time though, we’ll wait till we remove the fridge to clean the compressor, then take the wood off to cover it. Doing the fridge feels like we have upgraded it without spending the money and we’re glad we added it to our caravan cupboard makeover.

How We Covered The Doors

  1. One door at a time was taken off, wiped clean and sanded slightly if needed. For example, one of our cupboards had a scrape on it from the hook that goes over the door.

2. Contact paper was lay out on our table, reverse side up, before putting one of the doors on top, face side down. Marking out the size needed.

3. Once cut to size, Larry peeled back the contact to where he had marked (a couple of inch) Pressing the top of the door face down to stick to the contact paper.

4. After Turning the door over, I then pulled the backing off very slowly as Larry pressed the contact paper down in a side to side motion with a face cloth.

5. Larry folded the edges of the paper over to the back of the door, around an inch each side. Cutting the corners so that it fitted neatly.

6. On our initial doors we added left over matt paper to back the doors. Where as we used gloss paper to back the cupboards we use more often.

7. Cutting out the sections for the hardware was next as well as the screw holes

8. Finally, for our caravan cupboard makeover, we put our sprayed matt black handles back on.

Removing the self-adhesive contact paper is easy if you make a big mistake or change your mind. Larry removed the matt contact paper from the first cupboard door with ease. It was a little sticky on the sides but nothing a gentile clean or sand cant fix.

Concertina On-suite Bathroom Door

Replacing our concertina bathroom door seemed like the logical next step while doing our caravan cupboards makeover. I had seen a concertina door that looked like white oak from Bunnings and decided to give it a try.

Taking the old door off I realised that the new door was a little lighter in weight, that was an unexpected bonus. And our old door didn’t go to waste as we gave it to one of our travelling friends.

Replacing The Concertina Door

  1. Taking the original concertina door off, Larry unscrewed the side and top rail. He then used a screw driver to prise the side that attaches to the wall off. That side had been screwed and glued.

2. Next Larry measured the length of the old door and cut the new door to size with a jigsaw.

3. After screwing the new top rail in place we threaded the new door onto it, to see how it looked.

4. As the panels are bigger than the last door we thought it was a little to wide as there was a small gap on top.

5. We took off a small section, then a bigger section, placing the door back on each time to check out the width and fold ability. After a few tries of different combinations, we finally put it back on the way it came due to width and hinges.

6. After we slid the concertina door back onto the head rail (back in its original width) Larry screwed the side rail on. Lastly he attached the door by pressing the door onto the square clips he had screwed on.

7. The Concertina door came with plastic knobs which I didn’t want to use. I sprayed the silver looking plate for the hardware white, to go with the door. Also, instead of the bulky household knobs I bought a cheap 3 knob hanger. Cutting two of the knobs off and using them to open and close the door.

8. Lastly, I bought a bandanna which I sewed the original door fastener inside. I can still use it to fasten the door when on the move.

Adding A Splash Of Colour

After finishing our caravan cupboards makeover I felt our home on the road needed a splash of colour. I still wanted a relaxed, calming space so decided to go for a sage green peel and stick paper. Getting inspiration from our Daisy Graze Dinnerware.

Larry also wanted to add some mirrors, to add light and maybe make the place look a little bigger. As with most of our contact paper we bought the sage peel and stick paper from Amazon. Much like the acrylic square mirrors. The mirrors weigh next to nothing and don’t break if they fall off. I tried and tested that theory when we tentatively stuck them on to see whet they looked like without the proper adhesive stickers. They fell off but were fine 😀

Unlike the caravan cupboards makeover where we could take off a door and have it at hand, the walls were a little different. Larry peeled back a little of the backing paper at the top of the wall, making sure to extend a bit over. This was so if the wall was out of wack, it would still be wide enough and we could just cut off the excess.

I held the roll as we applied it to the walls, while also pulling down the backing paper. Larry used the same method as he did on the doors, using a wash cloth to apply it. One roll was used on each slim wall ether side of our on-suite door. Not much was leftover as the height was almost spot on and the width was good to. Three mirrors have be added to two walls which nicely reflects more light into the van.

A few bits of home decor and accessories have been added to bring the place together. I got some small, light shelves, on hooks which are attached to the wall with 3M Velcro. They have candles and plants (fake) held on with blue tack. I’m not planning on taking them down when we travel.

Our caravan cupboards makeover was the perfect way to upgrading our van without a permanent change or major costs. So far we ended up doing 19 doors, 6 draws, some wall parts, Fridge doors & the On-suite bathroom door.

Stick and peel contact paper has been a good choice for us. Larry seems to have had the magic touch when applying it. He hasn’t had to much trouble considering the amount of contact paper he has used.

Obviously we don’t know what it will look like down the track. So, if you’re considering doing the same, if you’ve been inspired, remember we are not experts, we just gave it a go. I’m glad we did it as I love the new look of our home on the road.

Mushroom Valley Eco Camp – Yalboroom – Qld

Hipcamp Large art mushroom at mushroom valley eco camp Qld

Mushroom Valley Eco Camp had been on my radar for a while. It had showed up on my Facebook, probably due to my nephew heading there for the Mushroom Valley Festival. You’ll find this camp with a difference, around one hour north of Mackay or 40min south of Proserpine, off the Bruce Highway.

After staying at The Park Mackay, we could have gone straight to our next destination at Gunna Go Caravan Park. Instead we made a booking with Hipcamp and stopped at this funky location for the night.

Whats Hipcamp?

Not familiar with Hipcamp? Hipcamp’s website shows you lots of unique camps on private land. Like the one here at Mushroom Valley Eco Camp. Some examples of the ones we’ve stayed at are:

  • Spending Christmas & New Years on Farm On Franklin in Tasmania. That camp is a regenerative environmentally sustainable family farm by the river.
  • Also, Meralda Station in Cobar NSW, another great Hipcamp. This is bush camp on part of a 400 acres property. As well as seeing heaps of stars and having a big communal fire you can do additional activities. Resin workshops, art classes and woman’s circle to name a few.

Anyway… Back to Mushroom Valley Eco Camp

Getting To Mushroom Valley Eco Camp

Located not far off the Bruce Highway, the road into this camp was fine for our van (it’s not an off road van). You do however have to take your time in parts as there were a couple of pot holes when we drove this road.

You’re given clear instructions of how to get to the camp once you book. Make sure you keep them with you as you do head towards a national park and you might think you’re going the wrong way. Silly me didn’t take the instructions as I should have. I had to get my lap top out of the van and double check.

Mushroom Valley Eco Camp

As soon as we arrived Ash came and met us at the entrance, giving us directions to the large camping area further along. Driving past a large block of dunnies and then some tented toilets with old funky material, I knew we were in Funky town. Ultimately these toilets are for there Mushroom Valley Festival. Next I noticed bright art work at a distance before spotting what looked like a frame for a huge yurt. I knew I was in my kind of camp.

Passing a couple of other campers we found a spot to park. As there is a river here we automatically parked so we overlooked it. Silly us! From the spot we parked we couldn’t see the water anyway. If we would have parked further back we would have at least got the view of the whole camp

We found a few firepits around the campsite and they do sell firewood. So you can sit by the fire at night and star gaze for hours. Yet another block of toilets are also here.

At Mushroom Valley Eco Camp they have recently planted new foliage. I can imagine it will be even more lush and green in the months and years to come. Looking around all you see is trees and bushes, no roads no building, just bliss.

Relax By River

Located on the O’Connell River, Mushroom Valley Eco Camp offers campers a pristine river to cool down in. Also, they have kayaks and floaties you can use for free. You might spot some ducks and you will definitely spot heaps of birds.

Mushroom Valley Festival

Mushroom Valley Eco Camp is also home to their Mushroom Valley Festival. With that in mind you’ll see not only the main stage all done up with cool art but also amazing art installations.

The festival looks like it would be one heck of a fun experience. If you’re in to camping, Bush doof, good vibes and the thought of a psychedelic wonderland you need to go to this festival. And then Pleaseeee tell me all about it! I’m hoping they will have day passes to check it out one day in the future.

It’s kid friendly as you can see from the pirate ship they have with the slide. Maybe that’s for adults though hmm.. 😀

This year the Mushroom Valley Festival is on from 16th – 18th September 2022 for their 10th anniversary. My nephew will be there as a fire performer and I’m a little proud, ok a lot 😀

Have A Stroll

Strolling around Mushroom Valley Eco Camp we spotted a couple of roos and more art. I did love the chilled out seating area with games and a fire place. Once again with touches of art. By the bridge there is a swap shop. Leave what you don’t need take what you desire. The wood carvings on all of the totem polls are spectacular.

The Park Mackay – Mackay – Qld

This was our 3rd stay at The Park Mackay. The first time we stayed was when we picked up our new Jayco van in 2016. Returning to the park when having our roof re-sealed a couple of years later.

After 7 years we were back in The Park Mackay while replacing our awning. As you can see from the photos of the awning, that didn’t quite go to plan as the end barrel was the wrong way around. Ultimately, we had to take it back to be fixed.

The Park Mackay

Having stayed previously, we knew it was a nice friendly caravan park. With the added bonus that it’s in close proximity to Jayco Mackay. The closest however, by a smidge, is “My Cow” caravan park (an unusual name I know). We have also stayed there a couple of times.

As I wanted to make sure we had a spot at The Park Mackay, I booked a few days earlier. They gave me a choice between a drive through site and a back in site. The back in site was cheaper so we chose that. On our first stay we chose a drive through site as it was our first parking of a caravan.

Arriving at reception, I said “hi” to a lady who had stayed at our previous low cost camp at Nebo. Then again at the dump point on route. It’s a big country small world!

Sites at The Park Mackay are lovely green grass. Having spent the last few months on a mainly dry sheep station in Bourke NSW for Larry’s work, this was refreshing to say the least.

The Park Mackay has powered and un-powered sites. And as with most city caravan parks the sites are a certain size. Not to say they are small as they are not! We fit our 21ft van and ute it fine. Big rigs I think park over the back where there seems to be heaps of room. Where as most seem to be in the main camp area.

The Park Mackay Amenities

Toilets and showers are in easy reach of every site and they have a laundry and large washing line. They do have a dump point if you like to use your own facilities.

Two large BBQ’s are available to use in the undercover seating area. While the camp kitchen is huge and has a book exchange available. The Pool looks lovely for those warm summer days.

Have A Drive

The Park Mackay is a great place to base yourself while you have a drive around the area. Here are a few Ideas:

  • Eungella National Park & Finch Hatton Gorge – Go walking in the subtropical rainforest and cool down by the waterfalls. You might spot a platypus. We got engaged there and highly recommend a visit.
  • Shopping – We aren’t big shoppers, but having been back O’Bourke for a few months it’s nice visit Bunnings. Also, it was time to get a few bits of clothes for the warmer weather. Head to the large Caneland Central for all your shopping needs.
  • Beaches – Visit the many beaches in the area like Cape Hillsbourough and Blacks Beach

The Big 4 Lake Maraboon in Emerald, is in a perfect spot. Out of town and next to Lake Maraboon. We booked a site here a few days before arriving. Yet again, I’m so glad we did, as it’s a popular place. Previously we have stayed in Emerald at the Emerald RV Camp & Park. Located closer to town this is another great park.

Before arriving at Big 4 Lake Maraboon we crossed the Fairbairn Dam. The road over it was highly elevated, narrow and very unexpected. Absolutely fine to travel over although we used an alternative road to head in to town and to leave.

Big 4 Lake Maraboon

The friendly staff welcomed me when I arrived at the reception and gave me instructions on how to find our site. I remember hearing her say “ Helipad” but didn’t think anything of it. Thankfully, like a lot of parks, they gave me a map. I’m so glad they did as it’s a huge park.

Driving past cabins and caravans we drove to our site. Our site was indeed on the Helipad. Yes really!! There was a grass roundabout with a large square concrete slab with a large “H” on it. Pulling up on one side of the helipad and using is as our slab. Obviously this is no longer used as a helipad!

As we were on a island and surrounded by caravans, we did feel like we stuck out like a sore thumb but we got used to it. I think we were given this spot as when I booked online you get a choice of 20ft van or less or a 25ft or less. Our van is 21ft so I think we were given a spot for large rigs. Next time I would call and book as our van would have fit in one of the sites overlooking Lake Maraboon.

The View

Big 4 Lake Maraboon has a beautiful view of the lake, if you’re in the right site. From our spot on the helipad we did get glimpses of the water and sunset.

Big 4 Lake Maraboon Amenities

You’ll find a couple amenities blocks in the park. The ones near our camp looked updated. Not that we normally uses them but I did use the washing machine and dryer this time. After leaving Larry’s Job on the sheep station in Bourke NSW, we hadn’t done any washing. The washer was $4 and it was nice to get the laundry done so quickly.

Alternatively, If you don’t have your own on board facilities, you can book an On-suite site.

BBQ’s & Camp Kitchens

As with the amenities the Big 4 Lake Maraboon has a couple of camp kitchens. The one opposite ours had a large BBQ, kettle, toaster, fridge picnic benches and a sink. Just outside the kitchen was a lovely fire pit which one of the other campers lit each night.

Meeting other campers, it seem many come back each year and know each other. Returning for a few weeks or months at a time. A testament to the parks friendliness and location.

Dog Friendly

The park has an area where campers and there dog family can park. As well as having an enclosed area for your dog to run around freely they have a BBQ area. Unlike the other camp kitchens/BBQ areas this is open air in the dog friendly area.

Cafe At Big 4 Lake Maraboon

One of the draw cards for us was the fact this caravan park had a cafe. Unfortunately as they were short staffed they were not opening in the morning. Also they were only doing pizzas in the evening. Our first night we decided to go to the cafe for pizza, ordering before 4pm as requested. The cafe has plenty of seating but we chose to sit out on the deck.

The deck has a lovely view over lake Maraboon and over the pool area. This is a licensed cafe so I got a wine and Larry a beer. They also do cocktails if you fancy one.

You can order your pizza as a take away if you want to take it back to camp or don’t think you’ll finish it like me. We got the Roadkill pizza which is a meat lovers (no real roadkill don’t worry)

Boat & Kayak Hire

Lake Maraboon is stocked with eight different types of fish including Barramundi. Red Claw Crayfish is also in abundance. Heaps of keen fisherman had boats with them at this Big 4, if you don’t, you can hire one. Not into fishing? Hire a Kayak and just enjoy the water. A couple of kids trikes were also spotted at the reception also for hire.

Lake Maraboon

Have a stroll down to the lake or have a short drive. There are BBQ’s by the lake as well as undercover picnic benches. Signs say you can swim here which would be lovely in the summer.

Drive In To Emerald

While we were enjoying our drinks on the deck I posted some photos and put them on my Facebook page. One of Larry’s mates who lives in Emerald spotted where we were and invited us around. We had a drive to their place for a catch up which made a nice change after being out Back O’ Bourke with no one around.

I also got the chance to pop in to a proper shop, all be it Big W. Also, popping in to woollies for a fresh loaf. It’s the simple things!

The first time we were in Emerald we did go and see the big easel. It’s a 25 metres high painting of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. You can also see Emerald Botanical Gardens while your out and about.

The Big 4 Lake Maraboon is one we would recommend and we would definitely stay again.

July 2022 marks 7 years living and travelling full time in our home on the road. The time working and saving for our dream seemed to last forever, it was in fact around 4 years. Yet, the last 7 years has flown by. We have learnt a lot along the way and are still learning.

Here Are 15 Lessons Learned Full Time Caravanning So Far…

1. Have a tentative plan but be free to change them

We normally have an idea in which direction we want to travel, be that to a state or territory. Also, a rough idea of what town or location we want to head to. Apart from that, it’s a case of picking a road in that direction. For example, we booked the Spirit Of Tasmania and a Hipcamp (Farm On Franklin) in advance, chose a direction to travel then winged it for the three months we were there.

WikiCamps is our go to camp bible so we use that to pick camps along the way. Now, as our plans aren’t set in stone, if we like the look of another camp on route, we stop. Alternatively if we don’t like the look of a camp when we get there we drive on and choose another one. Sometimes we even decide on the morning of travel where we’re going to head.

2. There are heaps of ways to find a camp

Living on the road, this should probably be my number one of our 15 Lessons Learned Full Time Caravanning. If you have Facebook, and are in one of the a many camping groups, which hopefully includes ours 😉 then you would have seen someone asking for the best camp in a town etc. People often answer the question with “get WikiCamps”. Although we Love WikiCamps, this is irritating at times as they are asking for an opinion on a camp not an app.

WikiCamps is our go to but originally we also had one of the Camps Australia Wide books. I was worried we would be out of internet range and not be able to look up a camp. No worries though as WikiCamps has the ability to see content off line. That includes free camps, caravan parks, water taps, dump points & points of interest such as Australia’s Big Things, laundry mats and rest areas.

A couple more of our go-to’s are Country Pub Camping, not only do they have a website with pub camps around Australia, they have a Facebook group. This is where people share there photos and experience, supporting and camping at the pubs. Alternatively Staying at a showground is one we love. They are normally cheaper than caravan parks with the same facilities.

3. Your home on the road should work for your lifestyle

What ever you’re travelling in should be comfortable for you and your personal lifestyle. Thankfully we checked out new and pre loved caravans, motorhomes etc for a couple of years before we chose our van.

The caravan layout that was best for us has a club lounge. As we’re full time caravanning we can sprawl out and relax on it. Rather than having a cafe setting that you have to sit up to attention on.

Our large compressor fridge freezer is perfect for stocking up on food before we go to small outback towns. Not to mention being great when off grid in the middle of woop woop. Also in our kitchen we have an oven as I still cook the same as in a house.

Others opt for cooking outside on the BBQ (which we also have) but I do like my oven. Not forgetting our caravan washing machine. It’s been priceless for us when Larry’s working on a station and were nowhere near a laundry mat.

You should work out what your needs are and picture yourself in what ever you think you want. Then check out as many vans etc that you can and the decide on a layouts. Even better rent and test out the type of home on the road you want.

4. Planning the destination can be as good as arriving

Planning where we’re heading is usually my job (Sue). I love looking up what’s to see on the journey, whether that’s a lovely small country town, coffee shop, point of interest or landmark. As a traveller this is possibly my favourite of our 15 Lessons Learned Full Time Caravanning.

We have found that driving isn’t necessarily about getting somewhere, rather seeing what we haven’t seen along the way. Meandering in a direction, stopping where ever we feel, for however long we feel. Another example might be when we head to places like the sunshine coast hinterland. I got a spring in my step when I searched for things to do in & around the Kenilworth Showground, where we camped.

5. Finding work is easier than you think

Work was something we were worried about before we started full time caravanning. Larry has had no worries finding work since we hit the road. Unfortunately, due to long standing health issues I’m not working at the moment, but there is heaps of work if I could.

If you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone then it’s easier still. Larry’s found work on a cattle station in WA, work on a sheep station and work on a broadacre farm in NSW. Not to mention both of us working on an island in the Whitsundays both before and after Cyclone Debbie’s destruction.

Of course you can always check out our “40 How To Find Work While Traveling Tips” Post and Our Full Time Caravanning Facebook Page. Talking to locals at the pup & joining a Facebook group in the town you want to find work are also good ways to find work.

6. Only drive for around 200km

Early on in our travels we had a chat with another full time travelling couple. One of the pieces of advice they gave was to not drive more that 200km at a time or you miss so much. We try and keep to that advice, give or take a few kilometres.

Obviously if we’re heading to a Farm Sit or work, we might travel for longer. The Nullarbor is a prime example of stopping and smelling the roses. There are so many free camps with spectacular views, we didn’t want to rush and miss anything. Ultimately we are travellers not holiday makes.

7. Plan Meals

Planing our meals for a week or longer is something I find saves money, time and waste. Doing big cook ups and freezing them is also a must in our house. We have found this comes in handy when we’re travelling between camps and need a meal on hand. Something you don’t have to think about. Also, if we’re in remote areas with no supermarket we have dinner covered.

On a side note, when storing food in your freezer, remove packaging when you can, this will save space. It also gets rid of all that packaging in one go. This saves you emptying your bin so often.

Here’s what I do. I take out mince & chicken etc from it’s packaging and put it in to small freezer bags. I also do the same for large cook ups of soup, Bolognese and Chilli Con Carne etc. Write on the bag with a permanent marker what it is, temperature and time it takes to cook. A vacuum seal machine would be even better.

8. Living in a small space “isn’t” hard for us

I often hear people say “don’t you get on each others nerves living in such a small space”? The simple answer is “No”. Before we moved into our van we had lived in one room with an on-suite. That was when we lived and worked on Hayman Island. That gave us a taste of down sizing and living in a small space together. In fact our van is bigger than that room. certainly, having a kitchen and couch, makes the van feel much bigger.

Larry and I can be in the same room but feel like were have our own space. Larry’s happy on his side of the couch doing his caravan home tech stuff, watching Youtube or on his computer. I on the other hand can be on my computer, reading or cooking.

Larry often potters whether that’s tech stuff or keeping on top of caravan and ute maintenance. Netflix is something we both like to watch together while lose ourselves in a movie. Of our 15 Lessons Learned Full Time Caravanning this might be the hardest for some especially if you have kids or have come from a large house.

9. It’s a big country – small world

The saying it’s a small world certainly rings true when you travel around Australia. I guess visiting every state and territory we were bound to bump in to people. While shopping in WA, I noticed someone I worked with years ago in QLD. Larry met someone who went to the same school as him in QLD yet they are both from NZ.

We have even met people who know our family members. Not forgetting the people we’ve met on the road and bumped into again. Maybe even deliberately bumping into them again, like Frannie, Crispy & Bella from Not Grey Nomads when we crossed paths again in Tasmania.

10. People have trouble seeing outside the box

Some people cant understand how we live in a caravan full time. Some of the questions they ask are: “where do you actually live” (as in bricks and mortar house) they have a look of confusion on their face when we say ” our van is our full time home”

When asked “where are you from?” we say “we live on the road full time”. Ultimately, they don’t understand why we cant give a simple answer, with the name of a town. The thing is, neither of us live in the town we were born. We both have a bit of gypsy in us and I have never been in one place for long. We do tell people where we started our travels but that was 7 years ago now.

Similarly, when filling in forms it’s hard to give an address for anyone living full time on the road. When applying for a Telstra sim card for our router they wanted to know our jobs and the money we earn. Having savings we didn’t need to work for a while. We explain we were not unemployed, not on benefits and was not homeless. Our information is literally, outside the boxes they had to tick on their computer. Thankfully they solved the situation by bending the truth, saying we were on extended leave. This is the most annoying of our 15 Lessons Learned Full Time Caravanning

11. You wonder how people afford a “normal” life

I’m thankful every day that we don’t live the “normal” lifestyle. You know, that 9 to 5 job, a 30 year mortgage, huge power and water bills, living so close to people, working all hours to save for a two week holiday.

Similarly, when the world was in total chaos during the pandemic we felt very lucky. Once we had a safe place to park life was so much easier for us than people living a so called normal life. We had no mortgage to worry about when not working, no high bills to worry about, not stuck in a unit without a garden to breath in some fresh air.

You might think, how about the price of fuel? Again, as we’re not holiday makers we don’t need to drive every day to check out attractions. We can stop in one place for weeks or months. So when people ask “ how do you afford to travel full time” we wonder “how can you afford not to”?

12. We can live off grid indefinitely

Of our 15 Lessons Learned Full Time Caravanning, this brings us the most joy. We have found that catching our own water and produce our own power brings a smile to our dial. On our 3 month visit to Tasmania, we didn’t need to plug into power at all as our solar and battery set up was so good. For power, we have 3x 200w solar panels on our caravan roof as well as 3x 120ah Lithium batteries and a 300/600w inverter. That’s not including the solar, battery and 2000w inverter on the ute.

As for water, when it’s raining, we have our awning set up to catch water. Larry has automated the process so that the rain water is sent to a dedicated rain water tank which in turn sends it to our two fresh water tanks. No high power or water bills in our home on the road when conditions are favourable.

13. Keep an eye on maintenance

Larry is always working on something whether its needed or not. Not that that’s a bad thing. On the contrary, preventative maintenance is whats needed when living in any kind of home. Here’s a few things Larry looks at on a regular basis

Anode – Larry checks our Suburban hot water systems anode around every 6 months. We are often in places that have bore water. The anode is a sacrificial magnesium rod. Its job is to protect the hot water tank from corrosion, prolonging its life.

Hot Water System – At the same time Larry checks the Anode he checks the hot water cylinder, element and pressure relief valve. Again, we stop at a lot of places with bore water and calcium and have found we get a huge build up. If you are stopping at a caravan park on your holidays this is probably not something you should worry about. For us it’s something we keep an eye.

Re greasing the wheel bearings – Larry bought a wheel bearing packer so he could re grease the bearings to stop them wearing out. Larry is meant to do this ever year or so I believe. More in our Caravan Maintenance Tips post

14. Phone coverage & internet

Over the years we have found Boost has the best phone coverage for our need’s. Also for our internet when away from the van as Boost works on the same network as Telstra. We don’t have an off road van but we do go to places in the middle of woop woop. There are times when we might not have coverage but not so often we would swap it.

However, for our home internet we initially had the RV Wifi router. Larry uses the home router for our home assistant and tech stuff. Our RV Wifi started with an Aldi sim card but we changed it to boost for better coverage.

As we were finding our phones hot spot was in fact better than RV Wifi we changed to a Nighthawk M5 router with a Telstra sim card. Larry also bought an external antenna to boost the signal, just to be sure. Its the best we have had internet while on the road with speeds many times faster than what the RV WIFI ever gave us. Great for our Netflex watching. Of our 15 Lessons Learned Full Time Caravanning, Boost is something we recommend to try.

15. It’s Worth Joining A House Siting Site

The last of our 15 Lessons Learned full time caravanning is house and farm sitting. Great for saving money while travelling. We prefer farm sits rather than house sits as they are more likely to be on a property rather than a built up area. Also, they are often a longer type of house sit.

We have been lucky enough to farm sit with horses, chooks, dogs, cats and cows, all while staying for free on some lovely property. Ultimately giving us the opportunity to check out the surrounding areas without spending money on caravan parks etc.

While farm sitting on the Sunshine coast Hinterland we got to visit the beaches and rainforest. On other sits we got to stay near Nambucca Heads in NSW & another a drive away from the ACT. We use Aussie House Sitter and highly recommend them.

To conclude, as I mentioned, we are still learning and wouldn’t swap van life for quids. We can move if we have noisy neighbours, move to the coast and have a beach holiday or the outback and have a bush holiday all while staying at home.

Caravan Outside & Grey Water Tank Clean

Over the last month our caravan outside & grey water tank have been cleaned. Not only was the fibreglass looking dirty but oxidisation was apparent. As for the grey water tank, it wasn’t emptying although the valve was open.

Caravan Outside Cleaning

It was time to give the outside of our home on the road some TLC. Larry decided to buy a rotating buffer/polisher machine. He wanted to use it with the cut and polish we already had (3M Marine Cleaner & Wax) to bring back the gloss finish on the fibreglass. Larry bought the rotating buffer from Ebay for around $30, well worth it!

The worst parts of the van were the front (as that’s where all the road dirt and bugs land) and where the air-conditioners water seems to flow down the side of the van. Oh yes, and where rain runs the dirt off the roof.

As usual, we gave the van a clean first with a cloth tied to a broom, dipped in some soap and water. Drying it off the same way with a towel tied to it. This took off the main dirt. However, we noticed the oxidisation on the fibreglass stood out. Especially on the bottom grey part. Larry tested the new buffer on a grey patch and you could see instantly the difference it made.

It was the first time for Larry using the machine on the caravan so he tried different pads to see which was best. He used our telescopic ladder to reach the higher parts. On a side note our telescopic ladder is around 3 meters tall and our van is just over. Larry uses it to clean our solar panels as well as other bits and pieces.

The result of the caravan outside after using the 3M Marine Cleaner & Wax with the machine was much better. Unfortunately, we ran out after doing one side and the back. Larry got another kind but that one wasn’t as good. It didn’t cut in to the oxidisation as much as the other one. Also it was easier to wipe off with a cloth than to use the polisher. That was a Septone brand which we won’t be buying again.

We ended up doing most of the caravan outside, especially the lower grey part, as that stood out the most. Looking closely you can see where it’s shiny and where it’s not. But it can stay like that until we get a better cut and polish again.

Grey Water Tank Cleaning

This is a little embarrassing but it might help others so I’ll put it our there. Recently, our grey water tank monitor was showing up full yet we had the tank valve open. I had put the usual bicarb and vinegar down the sink but this time it didn’t help.

Here’s What We Did

  • Larry ended up cutting off the PVC outlet pipe connected to the grey water tank before some of the water came out.
  • He then got a tool to fish out some of the yucky hair he could see blocking the opening. This helped but didn’t totally fix it.
  • The water was still coming out very slowly even though we had the water running inside the van.
  • Finally, Larry put a hose in the grey water tank opening to try and flush out what ever else was in it.
  • In the end he fished out what looked like a large drowned mouse. It was actually 7 years build up of my hair. I know it’s gross.

To help stop it happening again, I ordered a shower/sink strainer thingy to stop my long hair malting into the grey water tank. Hopefully that will help! I just googled and got mine online but you can get disposable ones from Bunnings.

10 caravan kitchen must haves storage ideas

My 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves are just that, “My” must haves.

You my travelling friend, might beg to differ and that’s OK. Of course we all have different set ups, whys and wherefores.

Since we have been full time caravanning for almost 7 years, our kitchen items have changed. Moreover, they have been updated to the life we are leading now, rather than the one we lead in the first few years.

What’s the difference you might ask? Well.. When we first hit the road we took what we thought we needed from the stuff we already had. At that point in time our plan was to free camp as much as possible, which we did.

As time and the years have passed we have noticed we are stopping for longer periods at parks and showgrounds. Also Larry has been working, so we have been pulled up on powered sites more often than not.

With that in mind we have purchased more electrical equipment along the way. We already had our coffee machine, in fact, that’s always the first thing that gets taken with us. We also already had a nutri-bullet. It doesn’t take up much room so that’s also been with us since the start.

OK, lets get started…

My 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves Are:

1. Stackable Pans

Our first pans were what we had been using before moving in to our van. That being the usual 3 different size round pans and a couple of frying pans. On one hand they did the job just fine, on the other hand they took up too much space in our now smaller kitchen. Also, they didn’t all fit on the caravan stove all together, which could be frustrating.

That’s why Stackable pans is my no.1 on my 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves list. After seeing other travellers loving their square pan set we decided to take the plunge and buy some Smartspace Pots ourselves. The three pans stack inside each other nicely, taking up only the space of one pan. Also they’re non stick and can all fit on our small cook top together if needed.

We also got the frying pan which we stack under the pans. Not forgetting the removable handle that clips on when needed and off when stacking them away. We stack our pans under the sink with so many other things. We love these and highly recommend them

2. Light Weight Dinnerware

To illustrate how naive we were when we first started travelling, we had plastic plates and cups. We already had them and thought they would be a good idea. To be fair they were light and non breakable which should feature in everyone’s 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves

Then we got some Corelle, non breakable plates. The only ones I liked were the plain white ones as they were fresh looking and go with anything. Most had patterns that are not our style. These are what we would recommend for most people.

Fast forward to now and we have found Daisy Graze Dinnerware. An Australian owned company yayyy!! that have beautiful light, unbreakable, microwave safe and freezer safe dinnerware. An added bonus is that they are also 100% plant based and biodegradable. Whether we’re having dinner in the van or out on a picnic these look so bright and cheerful.

3. Slow Cooker

I have a couple of reasons for loving a slow cooker. Number one, ease. You can bung all your ingredients in and it’s done by dinner time. Like you need any other reason, but wait there’s more.

Number two, as we use the slow cooker when plugged into power, which is already paid for, we save on gas, Bonus! Our slow cooker is stored under our caravan fridge. This same reasoning could be made for your air fryer etc. as long as you have room for it.

4. Coffee Machine

As mentioned previously our coffee machine is a must. Maybe this should have been our no.1 in our 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves. We’re not camping or holidaying, we live in our van full time. It’s our home. Consequently, in our home we love coffee so have a machine 😀 We are now on our third machine as we use it so much.

Yes, we can use it when not on mains power. Using our 2000w inverter when we’re off grid. See what else we use off grid here. If you’re a coffee snob like us, don’t be afraid, take your machine (If you have the room). Alternatively the Wacaco Nanopresso Coffee Maker might be an option for those with a smaller space.

5. Toastie Maker

Yes, the good old Toastie Maker, or as other like to call them Toastie Pie Maker, Jaffle Maker or Sandwich Maker. What ever you call it in your household you might want to think about getting one. If you’re a straight out “ not on your Nelly” fair enough, they’re not for you. But, if you don’t mind the odd tin of spaghetti and cheese between a couple of slices of bread or dare I say beans, take one with you.

They’re great for a quick something when you can’t be bothered or cant think what to have for lunch or dinner. Kids love them and they’re cheap and cheerful. We store ours under the sink.

6. Kitchenware

I still cook the same as I did when we lived in a bricks and mortar home and I bake a little. So, with that in mind, here’s some of the main things we have and why. Strangely this is another 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves hhmmm….

  • Sieve – As well as using it for sieving flour I use this as a colander for draining pasta, spuds, rinse chickpeas etc. It’s always good to try and get multiple uses out of one item to save room.
  • Cutlery– having started out with six of each we have whittled it down to four of each. There really was no need for more. If other people pop over and we need more they bring there own.
  • Tongs – For the BBQ, to take out made up salad, to take out spaghetti instead of one of those spaghetti spoon things.
  • Silicon Spatula – I use mine when baking and cooking, great for our non stick space saving pans.
  • Bowl – We have one that is multipurpose. As a salad bowl, mixing bowl & fruit bowl
  • Measuring cups – collapsible or stackable – I use these for baking as I don’t have scales.
  • Pyrex Dishes – I have 2 rectangle dishes that stack inside each other, both have lids. I use these for anything from lasagne to chocolate brownies. They go in the oven, microwave, fridge and freezer.
  • Storage Containers – Whether it’s Tupperware, takeaway containers or other containers it’s good to have one’s that stack. Not just in the cupboard but in the fridge and in the freezer. We still have a mishmash of containers. I do use them constantly as I do big cook ups and freeze them.
  • Grater – We have one that you grate in to a container which has a lid. I use this to grate things like carrots & cheese. I can then put the lid on and pop it in the fridge.
  • Also a few basics are – Scissors, large serving spoon, peeler, tin opener, sharp cutting knives, 2x chopping boards – one for raw food and the other for veg etc.

7. Insulated Drinking Vessel

In hot or cold weather an insulated drinking vessel comes in handy. Whether it’s happy hour at the camp or coffee time while on the road, we have it covered.

Personally I like sparkling wine and have had plastic and glass champagne flutes for years. I prefer drinking out of a proper glass and the plastic is good for being around the pool. However, I have found that an insulated wine flute covers all bases. Not glass so is safe by the pool, not breakable, fits in my camping chair and the one I have is nice to drink from. Oh’ and it has a lid to keep the flies out.

Having insulated coffee cups has been great for Larry. He has a coffee to take with him when he’s working and it stays warm for hours. He’s also been having some protein shakes which stay cold till lunch time. The insulated cups are also great for our road trips.

My insulated flute was from Kitchen Warehouse but you can get heaps of Insulated wine glasses, bottles like these

8. Stick Blender & Bullet

The stick is great for quickly blending soup that I’ve been making in the slow cooker, blending dips such as hummus and thickening cream when my hand is about to fall off with the hand whisk.

I understand if a Nutri-Bullet isn’t in everyone’s 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves. We already had it and it’s good for using up fruit and veg and making a smoothie. It also takes up not much room.

9. Kitchen Bin

The perfect kitchen bin for us is one that fits under the sink. Yes! something else that fits under the sink. Ours was from one of those $2 shops and it takes around 3 or 4 days to fill. If we squash down cans, cartons and containers we fit more in. Can someone please let Larry know 😉

As the bags are relatively small the rubbish is easier to dispose of. We bought one of those large bags you hang from the spare tyre on the back of your van. Thinking, we would use it to store rubbish when we’re not able to dispose of it. We haven’t used it yet as we always find a place to get rid of it, being so small.

10. Storage/Holder

Storage ideas and holders for stuff and things had to be in my 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves. Very general I hear you say. You’re right it is. But, there are so many storage ideas out there, some of which we don’t have and some I would like.

We do however have a couple of can holders. One lives in the fridge for Larry’s bourbon cans and one lives in the cupboard which has all our spices in. It’s so much easier to pull them all out at once. I have the names of each spice on the lid so I can grab one easily.

To keep things organised in your cupboards, get some square storage containers so they fit beside or on top of each other nicely. If they’re collapsible, bonus.

Not part of our 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves but here’s some more information on our caravan kitchen.

Our Microwave was first used as a bread box as we free camped more often than not. However, now we use it for defrosting the meals I’ve made up in bulk or re heating. Off grid we just make sure we have meals out defrosting and re heat them in a pan or oven.

We have an oven and a cook top with 3 gas rings and 1 electric. It has a grill but it’s useless so we use a toaster, which we can use while off grid with our inverter.

As well as a kitchen wrap/foil organiser I would love to try a small vacuum food sealer machine.

Your 10 Caravan Kitchen Must Haves list maybe different, depending on what you and your family cook and eat. Moreover, what van/motorhome etc you are in and the space you have. Whatever the case, I hope some of My kitchen must haves, help you to decide what you do and don’t need.

Yanda Campground – Gundabooka National Park – NSW

Yanda Campground is on the road between Bourke and Louth. If you’re camping in Bourke you’re around 45km away from this camp. And, if your camping at the Pub camp in Louth, you’re about 59km away from Yanda Campground.

Heading To Yanda Campground

Yanda Campground is on the Darling River and is one of three camps in Gundabooka National Park. As we’ve been down the road in Bourke for Larry work and station job, we thought we’d go for a drive to check one out.

The road to the National Park from Bourke was mainly dirt road. Although it was a long way to go on dirt, it wasn’t actually that bad. It was graded and we would have taken the van all be it slowly. Obviously that would change with rain etc.

In contrast to the dirt main road, the road in to the Yanda Campground is graded and gravel. You’ll see signs on your way in showing where the camps are, in both Gundabooka & Toorale National Parks. As well as, a sign reminding you to book online for your stay.

Yanda Campground

After stopping near one of the BBQ areas we had a walk down to the river. The Darling looked quite full as it looked like you could have put your boat or kayak in right off the grass. You could certainly fish off the bank.

Tents are ok and this would be a good area to set up, if you’re allowed to set up here that is. You can see where others have had a camp fire in the area at some point.

There are 10 unpowerd sites available for use. Caravans and campers have dedicated set back areas to use, tents too. One of which looks like a drive through area for larger vans.

Amenities

Yanda Campground has toilets with a ramp, for those that might need it. They are open 24/7. They are long drop, flushing toilets and are not far from anyone’s campsite.

Close by is a large undercover picnic seating area. If there are a few of you camping together this would be a great area to have a drink or meal together. On the other hand maybe meet some fellow campers.

Adjacent to this large seating area is one of the two electric BBQ areas. Each is undercover and has a picnic table. In fact the other BBQ area is conveniently located along the row of camping areas.

Caravan storage ideas full time caravanning storage hacks

Caravan Storage Ideas was one of the first things I googled when we got our van. There were so many ideas out there it was hard to know what to choose or what was best for us. Over time we have added different types of storage. You’ll also see some items that aren’t storage per-say, but are related as you no longer have to find a place to store it.

As with everything, everyone is different. These are what work for us and hopefully they will give you some ideas of what storage you might need.

Caravan Storage Ideas – Walls

1. Hooks

We have 3M Command, removable hooks, which are our go to. Also, we have metal hooks over our bedroom cupboard doors. These hold our Towels, bags and coats in winter. On the other hand we use the removable hooks for hanging our Storage Pockets by the club lounge.

Caravan Storage Ideas can also be where you store your Fake Plants. In the same way we use removable hooks for our storage pockets, we also use them to hang our plants around the van. Likewise, our Kitchen Towel hangs on one by the cooker. All of these things stay in place when we move so no need to store them away.

Lastly, I did put a hook up in the bathroom for my hairdryer to hang, but as it’s not used very often it gets put in the draw.

2. Storage Pockets

Who hasn’t heard of storage pockets when looking up caravan storage ideas? As mentioned above we have a couple of storage pockets on the wall above our club lounge. Larry has one where he sits for things like sunnies, glasses, baseball cap and other odds and sods.

I also have one on my side of the couch for my bits and bobs. Storage pockets come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Ours were off Ebay for less than $20 each. I have seen other use these for Books, Tablets & Computers, Real Maps and more. Storage Ideas & Pockets suitable for caravanners can be found more places than caravan & camping shops..

3. Velcro

Our go to removable 3M Command products, this time Velcro. I made a place to store the odd photo or small keepsake out on the wall. It’s a canvas with a small rug stapled on (I was in a crafty mood) This is attached to the wall with Velcro strips, no drilling .

Larry also uses this kind of Velcro to attach tech stuff to walls. Things like our Extra Multi USB Ports, WiFi Router and hard drive. They stay perfectly in place when we move.

4. Shower Storage

Whether it’s for your caravan shower or the camp shower, there are heaps of options and ideas to choose from. The Harvey & Oliver Shower Set & Mesh Shower Hanging Organiser, are just two.

5. Spice Storage

Our spice rack is one of those can holders. These holders are great for those looking for Caravan Storage Ideas. Not only do they store cans (like Larry’s Bourbon Cans) in the fridge, It holds all our spices. I can just pull it out of the cupboard and pick one out. I do write the name of each one on the lid so I can easily see what they are. Alternatively you can use it for it’s original purposes and stack your cans in the cupboard in it.

This works for me but I have seen other people with their spices on little lazy Susan and spice racks on the vans kitchen wall.

6. DIY Cupboard Shelves

This is one of my favourite caravan storage ideas. Our van came with two cupboards one with shelves the other with hanging space. The hanging space was mine but I preferred shelving as I could fit more in.

Larry made me three shelves with some MDF and some brackets. I can now fold multiple clothes and nothing falls of a hanger. What about ironing I hear you say? That’s not something we do. Our lifestyle is on the road ready shall we say 😀

Hanging organiser/shelve are a great idea for those that don’t want to get out the drill and saw. They can be used for clothes, shoes, toys or anything else you can think off.

7. Under Sink Organising

Our organiser is very basic. We bought a couple of container when we first set off and it hasn’t changed. Maybe it should as there are so many new solutions out there.

Anyway.. Our main go-to storage is a long container, which has a roll of bin bags, roll of chux, extra scrubbers, an old toothbrush for cleaning and some ant rid that often comes in handy. Not forgetting my essential clean everything solution in a spray bottle. That’s water, white vinegar and a little washing up liquid. I never buy cleaning products, this covers everything.

In a box at the back of the cupboard is our just in case stuff. Things like mouse traps, scrubbing brush, insect bombs (that are probably way out of date). On top is our dustpan and brush and disposable gloves. Full disclosure… the gloves aren’t for cleaning. They’re for Larry, when he colours my hair 😀 The gloves that come with the product don’t fit his larger hands.

8. Dustbin/Rubbish

As there is only the two of us we have a small bin which again fits nicely under the sink. If we compact things like cans & milk cartons, etc. we don’t have to empty it for a few days. A bin is not something we have room for in our van so this is perfect for us.

I also like The Bin in the photo above which fits inside of your cupboard door or on the wall. Similar, you could have a Over The Door Bag Hanger like the other photo. A great solution if you don’t have the room in your van. Not practical for us we use all the space under our sink. When we move I take the bin out as our coffee machine gets taken of the counter and put in it’s place. The bin then gets partly tied and placed under the table. It’s been fine so far.

9. Spare Wheel storage Bag

As I’m talking rubbish 😉 I’m going to pop this one in here. For those that might be off the beaten track more than others this is one of the classic caravan storage ideas. Also great for those who might have a bigger family or are off grid for long periods of time.

We have had our bag for a few years now and not actually made use of it yet! It folds up and is stored away in case we do though. I would rather have this put away for back up then be stuck with no where to pop our rubbish. I hate it when people over fill bins or leave their rubbish beside it, just get something like this Spare Wheel Storage Bag.

10. Stackable Pans

Another item that goes under our sink. I say item, but it’s actually items! They just feel like one thing. They are Smartspace pans. One of the best space saving items we have and so a great caravan storage ideas. Three pans are different sizes, there lids and heat pads all stack neatly inside each other.

We also bought the frying pan which sits under these Smartspace Pans. Also the handle is detachable, that lives in the draw. Obviously these take up way less space then all the original pans we had. As you can see they also save space when on the cooker, all fitting on together. Unlike our old round and different sized pans. Similarly, you can get round ones that stack inside each other but I think you would still have problems fitting them all on the stove at one if you need to.

11. Collapsibles

These days it seems you can get everything collapsible. Myself, I have collapsible measuring cups. I have been looking at Collapsible Silicon Containers to store food in. It’s a great idea to be able to store food in them and press them down to the amount of food in there. As well as storing them easily of course. A Fold Away Bucket always comes in handy for cleaning etc

A Collapsible Kettle Or Pop Up Kettle might be a good idea for others, We have a coffee machine 😀 And, these cool Compact Stools, collapses down to a disc. Adjusting up to 10 heights.

12. Jewellery

Jewellery is not something I wear a lot/at all so it gets stored away. The pieces I have are mainly junk jewellery so looking after them or security isn’t an issue. That’s why they are stored in a fold up/hanging toiletry bag. After hanging it up on it’s hook on the inside of my cupboard door when it had hanging space, it’s now folded up and neatly together in a cupboard. Bear in mind this could also be used as a toiletry bag to take to camp amenities.

13. Storage Boxes

A must have! of my caravan storage ideas. They’re cheap, can bring some colour and are super handy. At the end of our slide out bed we have our 4 fold away boxes. They fit perfectly. Some people use them as under bed storage but we find them handy at the end of the bed. The content of our boxes change constantly.

At the moment we have .. Box No1. Has wine, cordial and 10lts of water. Box No2. Has toilet rolls and UHT milk. Box No.3 has Larry’s work snacks and protein shake powders and finally box No.4 has all my footwear. All of these stay where they are when we move and hardly move out of place.

As you can see there’s a huge range of things you can put in these boxes. I know others who put there toaster, air fryer and Manchester in theirs. Alternatively I absolutely love the natural look of these Baskets And Boxes they look so homely.

15. Blue-tack

For those wanting to leave things out and in place, you might want to try Blue-tack. I use it to keep my fake bathroom plant in place on the counter next to the sink. It’s very light and I don’t have to store it away when we move.

16. Kitchen Sink Organiser

By our sink we have a small bowl with washing up liquid, plug, dishcloth and scrubber. This is put away under the sink when we move.

Caravan Storage Ideas – Ute & Awning

17. Toe Vehicle Canopy

Back in 2015 when we got our caravan, we decided to get a canopy put on our tow vehicle. That being our 2011 Holden ute. We wanted to increase the storage capacity and make it more weather proof. So, here’s an idea of what we use that extra space for. Remember we live full time on the road so our maybe different to yours.

Larry has quite a few storage boxes for things like his soldering gear, cleaning stuff and our rainwater catchment gear. As well as the draw system he put in for his tools. He made a place to store the inverter and the lithium battery we use when off grid. Our Generator is there just in case, but never gets used (once is 6 years and that was only because the farm we stayed at lost power).

18. Awning

Depending on your lifestyle you might have a closed in awning so you have an extra room or you might just have the shade clothes like us. Ether way here are a couple of storage ideas for your awning. This Nomad Awning Organiser is great for sunscreen, Insect Replant, umbrella or fishing rod etc.

4 Mile Reserve Brewarrina – Free Camp – NSW

4 Mile Reserve Brewarrina is just over 100km east of Bourke. We had stopped at Brewarrina Caravan Park for a couple of nights after leaving Opal Caravan Park in Lighting Ridge. You can checkout Lightning Ridge caravan parks and the Pubs In The Scrub free camps here.

Driving here in our ute for a look was a piece of cake. You’re on sealed roads till you get close to the turn off to the reserve. Then the road is graded dirt and gravel all the way to the camp. We would of been happy to take our caravan here if we had known how good the road was at the time.

Arriving, we noticed a few caravans and campers parked by the water and on the grass, under the shade of trees

A few picnic benches are around the free camp. One of which has a couple of wood BBQ’s for you to use. All have bins and shade.

River Camping

As well as the free camping sites along the Barwon River, at 4 Mile Reserve Brewarrina you can pop your boat or Kayak in. A boat ramp is here for those keen to get in to the water. Alternatively put your line in off the jetty and see if you can catch something.

Added Extras: 4 Mile Reserve Brewarrina maybe a free camp but it has toilets and showers (cold). We never expect any of those at a free camp these are always extras that are appreciated.

Fishing At 4 Mile Reserve Brewarrina

If you’re in to fishing, the “Bre Big Fish” is held every June long weekend with two days of fishing. It brings over 600 people to the region to fish along 120kms of the Barwon Darling River. Murray Cod, Yellowbelly, Black Bream and Catfish can be caught here. 4 Mile Reserve might be the perfect camp for this event.

Brewarrina also has 40,000-year-old, Aboriginal Fish Traps that are heritage-listed. A network of rock weirs in the water, stretch for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream.

These fish traps are interesting to see and are a short drive away from the camp. You can also do a tour and have a Dreamtime story told by Aboriginal elders.

So, grab your Fishing Gear, Camp Chair and Fire Pit, maybe even a Good Book. Then have a relax at 4 Mile Reserve Brewarrina.
