Terowie Railway Yard – Free Camp – South Australia

The Railway through Terowie is no longer in use and hasn’t been since 1988 when the last goods train departed. Some of the old buildings have been restored, the platform still remains and some of the tracks are still there.

Brief history of Terowie

In the 1970’s the population went from 2000 to 150. This was due to transhipping of freight and livestock stopped. All the shops look like people just walked out and left their shops and never came back. The only shop open is the Post Office. They also sell your very basics. The post office is at the back of the store.

Where to camp

There is a large area to park at the railway yard, a multitude of large vans could park there.

This is a good place to stay the night after you have had a walk down the main street and checked out this empty looking ghost town.

  1. My wife as a young girl actually lived at the Station until the house attached was burnt down. Her Dad was the Stationmaster there at the time.
Her aim is when we are through there next time she wants to park our motorhome home exactly where her bedroom was.

    1. Wow, I love that story Darrell. Thank’s for sharing your wife’s connection to the railway. How special to be able to park up exactly where she lived. Happy travels to you both 🙂
